BIG WHINGE AHOY!!I'm trying to eat really healthily having a treat day on sunday and a biggish homemade curry on saturday.I have an activia yogurt and a fruit ryvita and a bit of fruit for breakfast, fish/chicken and salad midday and either more salad and protein for tea or pasta Aside from the horsey jobs I do 30-40 mins on my stepper 5 days a week but my weight is exactly the same!! Been doing this for over a month and still no real difference Although I'm fairly toned I have a layer of tummy squishiness that won't budge even though I'm not big or at all overweight by medical charts (5ft 5 and-a-bit and around 9 stone),but I want to be all lean as I was when I was dancing.don't want to starve or be silly about it as I want to feel energetic I am partial to probably too much wine.how detrimental could that be? Could it be why it's all around tummy. I feel bloated too and despite doing waist exercises and sit ups I've gained an inch!!.and no I don't think I'm preggersAnyone else disheartened by diets etc??

Mittens - cut out the wine - got to go I am afraid. Try to vary you healthy eating - add vegetables and try and eat your main meal at lunch time and light food in evening - nothing after 7.30pm. Do you vary your exercise on the stepper cos if not there wont be a change you need to change your metabolism. Add 50 situps into your routine - breath out on the exertion so that muscles develop correctly - i.e. invert. Also do lateral sit ups (twist on the way up opp elbow to opp knee to help work the obliques) Treat day on Sunday - well you could be undoing everything depending on what your treats are and the curry on an evening isnt helping either! That said everythig in moderation - dont cut all your favourites out or you will crave it - just have a little. Dont lose heart keep going!

I have lost a stone for two weeks. Try aviod the wheat like bread, cakes and biscults. U need to avoid the potatoes. Just plenty fishes and veg/fruits. plus dried fruits/nuts for your break time.

reduce the cheeses, creams, red meats. semi skimming milk will be fine. PLUS PLENTY WATER! eg. 2 litres per day.

my tummy is not flat yet but lost a stone for two weeks!!!!

any tips...let me know

Thanks you two! A stone in 2 weeks is flippin good going!
I think my biggest battle is that the OH refuses to modify his cooking to a low fat version of the same,so typically male cooking involves lots of oil and he gets grumpy when I point it out to him because HE thinks I look lovely!(plus I don't have a gallbladder so shuld eat low fat as a matter or course). But it's not about what he thinks. He cooks too much too so we often have more than we should. I calculated based on my height and weight and BMI that I need 1240 cals just to stay like this, obviously being quite little I don't need as much fuel as someone weighing 10 stone for example.
My stepper has those power cord elasticcy doofers which I used until one fell off!! I use horse pooh to tone my arms! I tend to do 20 mins on the lightest setting to get my heart rate up with quick steps, then the remaining mins on the hardish setting for toning. Also I sometimes do one min quick, one min slow til the times up.There are oblique exercises you do on it too. I'm doing 30 sit ups at the mo but think I might be doing it wrong, hence gaining an inch.
In my dance days I survived on 350 cals a day interspersed with binges (eating disorders always an issue with me)and 2 hours ballet every day.I was about 7 stone and looked a mess Maybe I've stuffed up my metabolism?

Situps, situps, situps - I found that you need to do in the region of at least 100 a day if you want a lean tummy as a result... Hard work but worth it if it's for a special occasion!!

I haven't been doing mine for a while and it shows

Oh mittens I am very similar to you - all my weight is around my tummy and unfortunately azeer is right about the wine

I eat very carefully but I drink wine most nights and that is my downfall as I am not overweight but I have that same bloated tummy.

Obviously the situps will help, but if you can cut out the wine, I reckon your tummy would shrink. x

I'm just slightly taller than you but nearer 10 stone!!
Always been about 9 st 4 lb so hate being nearer 10!!
Daft thing is I don't feel that big? - I must be in denial?

Started wearing a pedometer to see if I'm walking enough - doing about 14,000 steps which I think is quite good - someone on here will probably tell me if its not enough? Obviously I must be eating too much! May go to the chemist to check myself on their scales.
Good luck with the diet.

thanks all!! I also drink at least 3 times a week and a glass of red has 115+ cals,no fat but the body metabolises the sugar from booze ahead of any food as it's easily expendable. If I drink and don't have my evening meal I feel thinner in the morning and not bloated but flippin rough with it!! The OH has a stressful and emotional job and likes to unwind with wine, but if it's not here I don't want it, it's just a habit.I would find it easier to cut out if he didn't drink but my willpower shouldnt be his problem..however our health should.
100 sit ups???!! Hmmmmm... not looking forward to that!! I've also read that all the sit ups in the world won't help if you aren't doing any fat burning stuff, you just get a hard tummy with fat on top!!!!
I'm going to have veg rice tonight and limit myself to one glass of wine if I can't resist.football on so will need something as he'll be off limits!!!

Sorry to say this but unless you are dong at least 45 mins of pure cardio work approx' 4-5 times per week, you will not shift any excess weight off your abs by just doing sit ups alone. You need to blast off the fat first so you can see the abs! I'm not saying you're fat at all.
Remember that when you start excersisng you will also be building muscle and may gain some weight due to this, muscle is denser than fat. I would suggest you look at how your clothes fit you rather than what you weigh!
You really need to do cardio 4-5 times per week as this is what will lean you out, the cardio shifts the fat, then maybe some reps of light weights 3 times per week to tone your arms up, get some ankle weights too, aswell as squats and lunges for your legs, and you need to differ the sit ups you do it's pointless doing the same crunches all the time, that combined with the horses should see a difference in a month and after 3 months should be making you alot leaner.
But try to vary the forms of excerises you do after a while, doing different excersises is what will make you lean and strong and challenge your body and change your shape.
Why don't you buy some DVD's? I really rate Tae Bo, so much fun. Also try jogging too as it will blast the fat but if you don't like that try power walking around your fields or get out on your bike?
You are not eating the right things at breakfast to keep you going, try a big bowl of porridge with your fruit on top and that will last you till lunch time!! Make sure you eat enough protein and cut down on carbs slightly. Have 5-6 small meals a day to keep you going and fuel yourself rather than tring to digest 3 bigger meals a day.
I take a high strength Green Tea supplement and have never had a cold since taking them and they also are said to rev your metabolism too.
But I think the key to looking lean is to get your heart rate up and do cardio work to lose inches, you must expend the energy you put inside you, what goes in you have to work off again.

I do love doing it though and have a great dance dvd which also uses alot of my old ballet stretches and good cardio sections, maybe I should alternate between stepper and dvd? I just wish my car was as economical as me!!!Coz of the dancing my legs quickly tone up so I have to careful I don't get too bulky, gonna try the green tea again, also yoga as it seemed to calm my appetite before

mittens, try an persuade your OH to go to the pub for a drink instead of at home. He will relax, socializing. Also with wine been more expensive out, you will drink less. how about a pub quiz?

Danielle's got it spot on!

I'm also a strong advocate of yoga. I've been doing it for 2 years now and have really noticed a change in my body shape - much more toned and 'sculpted'.

Gemma I agree, although you might not be blasting away at fat it does give such a streamlined look without all the huffing and puffing, even though I do like feeling like I've done something puff inducing too!! Sometimes it strangely seems to trigger my sciatica so I have to be careful not to push myself too hard. Trouble is I feel like eating all he wrong things now as I'm disheartened, and football's on so BOORRREEDD!!!!

I also run and train to do endurance riding, so am pretty fit anyway.

You do have to be careful with yoga. If you have any existing back problems you have to be careful not to do too much as you can aggravate it.

I'm just back from my class. Now feeling virtuous, but no chocolate or alcohol in the house.....!!!

I also have no chocs but had some wine...I'm SO stupid! Tea was salmon and dill with new pots and beetroot salad so not over-stuffed.Have waved away further offers of wine and having a brew. I never really thought abou back troubles but I suppose mucking out etc is all one-sided,and carrying a handbag on one shoulder is also bad according to my old back woman, ditto sitting cross legs, should only cross at anklesI sit like a bloke so not a prob

I'm another one who puts weight on around my tummy, the curse of the muffin top
I don't weigh myself I just go by my clothes and my size 10 jeans are feeling a bit too tight.
And I can confirm it's not the vino! I hardly drink at all these days but have more weight on my tum than when I was a student and a regular drinker.

I would love a toned stomach but for me it's the stuff of dreams. I just don't have time for loads of exercise and I don't eat until 8p.m. every night because of work and horses. Now the nights are lighter I can at least take the dog for longer walks at night, maybe I should try running with him
Hats off to those of you who keep up the gruelling exercise regimes

Eeeyore I remember a time when booze didn't sit on me like it does now! But then I was dancing the night away and burning it off, now I sit here and drink and don't exercise til the next day! I don't really want to have to dedicate all that time to a work out that I'll have to continue for ever! I can't win!
Also I tried a mug of green tea today and within seconds I felt really sick and strange,I think thats why I didn't carry on drinking it last time, although I might persevere! Easter's coming up and I know I won't be good at resisting chocs as I have to get them all out the way before I can eat healthily as I know they're there, waiting for me!!

Mittens you are not overweight at 9 stone (or at least I am nearly 5 5" and just under nine stone and I dont think I'm fat. Having said that, I am making an effort to cut out the wine. Realised I was drinking at least 2 large glasses a night so probably 300 calories on top of the food. Now though I need more food...
Hope you weren t seriously cutting out the food in favour of the wine (I've considered that too) Yoga is a good idea but havent quite got round to finding myself a class. Someone did give me a 'horse-yoga' dvd for Christmas which is quite amusing.

Horse yoga!!!? I feel a cartoon coming on! I know I'm not fat and everyone says I'm tiny and a stick! I ain't no stick,I am really narrow shouldered though and quite narrow hipped so any weight gain is everso noticable and I get that mono-thigh thing! My broader framed friend is my height and she looks like a hat rack at 9 stone, proving how we all are so different.I did used to have booze instead of food when I was singing as I didn't want to burp and trump my way through The Fields of Athenry! Plus it steadied the nerves!! Made up for it the next day though!I'm an all or nothing person and find striking a balance very difficult although I can be extremely disciplined when I get the mindset right.Mum's lost a stone through cutting cheese out!

I'm lucky and don't put weight on round my tum (have a long waist which is weird as I also have long legs and i'm only 5'6 hey ho!) BUT the only thing that gets weight off off me easily is running!!! Although I am also very partial to cheese and Bacon Paninis (just had one) and Crisps, so guess I can't moan!

I do spinning 2 times a week and yoga once, ride 4/5 times a week and muck-out everyday but I am 10 stone (feel happier when I am 9.5)!!

I know I have to start running again (and ditching the cheese and crisps) to burn of the calories but it's just getting the motivation! Once I have to start wearing thin summer stuff I will soon shift it!

Another thing that works is to ride a horse you are a bit scared of! Seriously (I am not advocating anothing dangerous here) but riding a spooky horse or one who gets excited out galloping etc raises your heart rate and makes you lose weight!

So does a 45 min lunge lesson with no stirrups or reins

OOOh the dreaded lunge session!! The last one I had was with a trick rider learning all the pre-vaulty stuff...scissors and all sorts for half an hour! I felt absolutley knackered and no exaggeration I couldn't walk for a week,John Wayne eat your heart out!Think I split my difference!!It's been a whle since I rode mine due to circumstances and leaving it s really need to get started again, great for the mono-thigh!!
Wish you hadn't mentioned paninis!Chicken breast and spinach for lunch...

No pasta, rice, potatoes I occassionally suck a square of plain choc & it's all killing me !!!! Got to loose the rest of my baby weight.....I mean the twins are almost 20 I could devour a curry & magners

Definately exercise, i've always eaten pretty much what I wanted but since Shida died and I haven't been riding and also with Ishara being away and not even mucking out I feel enourmous! I've put on 9 pounds and whilst not fat I feel very uncomfortable! Trouble is where as you have no choice but to go and do your horse, when I get home from work and think about going running it just doesn't happen. Instead I sit in front of the tv with chocolate! Anyway once Pickle is home i'm determined to lose it again especially with summer coming. Perhaps we can all inspire each other!
