I am in a pickle, Lately our TB is lovely, and at 9 years old she should be doing something, I bought her for my son or husband to ride and they have ridden her she is so good, green but really good, no malice in her, not a typical TB as she is happy to plod and not race about everywhere and does not have a bad bone in her body. The problem is my son is going away to college, my husband is working long hours even most weekends and I am here with the horses to do, I cannot take Milly out as lately gets really upset and I won't ride big horses anymore and lately is a full up 16.2, so she is being totally wasted, but I am terrified to sell her as so afraid where she will end up it would be so easy to bully her as she is so easy and my friend jumped her, and she said she loved it, so she should really be out there doing something, also she loves lots of cuddles and strokes so would need to be someones "baby" I thought about swopping her with an old Arab mare that would be company for Milly and not bother about being not ridden??????? I don't know what to do for the best. she has to be rugged in the winter as drops the weight very easily when cold so where do I find her a home like she has with us but where she will be loved and cared for as someones "special Girl" all advice accepted and thoughts....... Maybe its best to keep her, at least she is well looked after, but she is only 9 years old, is this fair?????

I hear this expression a lot about a horse being wasted, but i think of it in this way. Would my horse be happy with good grazing equine company and being looked after with lots of fuss and grooming with no ridden work? I think he would so in that respect he would not be wasted and i am happy with this also. If he were the type of horse that thrives on being ridden and worked then i would have to think about maybe getting a nice person for him to ride but stay where he is. Sending you a hug cos it is a real heart wrenching thing to think about. |

Hi Gerri
How about advertising for a person to come and ride out with you? It would be a nice way for you to meet someone local to make friends with and then both horses would be happy and you would be riding them both! This is what i did, well didn't advertise but got in touch with Claire (honeyb) from here and now she rides my mare (or my tb gelding) and i get to ride with company and have a great friend too. Im sure your horses are happy and i wouldn't worry too much about her not getting worked. What they don't know they don't miss and i expect she'd be happier warm, fed and in a loving home for the rest of her life. Plus you can bet if you sold her your husband would find he had more time and you'd miss not having one to ride each! |

Great idea, Dinkydoo....
OR If Lately doesn't like being left alone, depending on the riding, would it be safe to ride Milly and lead Lately?

Yes, if horses are happy and cared for they don't think they are wasted...because they're not. |

i have to agree with all above, i would definately not sell or rehome, you have the home just get someone to exercise if that is what is needed. |

Yes, I agree with all that you are saying I just thought with all the oldies and horses that are unable to ride that are being rehomed, that if someone had an oldie or out of action horse and could not afford to buy another and did not want to sell thiers they could use her and I could keep the other here until such time we could swop back, that way I don't part with her and never see her again or her future in Danger and the oldie has a rest home that the owner could check and keep tabs on, therefore all happy. but it is only a thought and not set in stone as I look at her now with her coat gleaming and she looks well and she is happy I think Mmmmn maybe not such a good idea. Also I live in the middle of no where in France and I don't think there is any English people round that ride |

Why do they have to be English? Surely making friedns with locals through riding would be a good way to integrate??? |

Sorry, but where did I say they HAD to be English?????? I meant to say there is NO ONE around here that rides out, well certainly not around where we live we don't have any near neighbours apart from one old couple up the road, who are lovely and we have lots of french friends, who sadly aren't horsey, but lovely people all the same, thank you for your helpful advice and words of support, if I see anyone FRENCH or ENGLISH that would like to ride, I would be only to willing to offer the use of my horse, it would be lovely to have company to ride out with. |

Yes, I sorry too, I did not mean just English, thats what I hate about writing things or texting, sometimes it can come across one way instead of another, and I really do appreciate people taking the time to reply. I would give anything to have someone to ride out with, especially as I am getting older and don't hit the ground as well as I used to |

I think that in the end I will just have to buy another horse, maybe to keep lately company while I take milly out, I really did not want to do that at the moment as have so much to do on the house and need stables building etc, also I had set my heart on getting a black or black bred mare to breed with my own stallion, which means the numbers are mounting up again, I just totally confused, maybe I should just give up the riding idea altogether and retire the horses along with myself now I want to cry |

Could you teach Lately to pony off Milly? If you could get them both out together that may solve the problem? Wasted sitting in a field? No, i honestly don't think that 99% of horses would have any qualms about sitting in a field for the rest of their lives. Mine do like to get out and about, they do enjoy it. But, i don't thinkl they'd miss it if they never left their field again! Otherwise if you could afford to, get a rescue pony Ros x |

The funny thing is your all right in what you say, but if you think about it, I want a black or black bred SE mare to breed my boy too, I need a companion if I keep lately and before you know it I have all these more and I fall in love with my horses and therefore could never part with them unless I have theoption to get them back so I know their future is safe, cannot help the way I am its just me but you are all great always there with good advice which is exactly why I write on here as soon as I get in a pickle and you have never let me down so I do my best to be there for all of you too x Gerri |
