I've just had a phone call from Vodaphone. Or at least I think they were Vodaphone.
They already knew my name and asked for my address and DOB to prove who I am so I replied saying how do I know that they are from Vodaphone. They replied stating correctly when I got my phone, what my deal is, the tariff I am paying, even the handset I was given so I gave them the first line of my address and DOB to verify that they were talking to me.
They then offered me a terrific deal, 1 year free insurance and other benefits. Sounded really good....... listening to the small print talk I realized that it tied me in to paying for the insurance for 18 months, something I certainly wasn't interested in so I said so and ended the conversation.
I did give them the first line of my home address and my DOB. I did not give them any other details. If they weren't from Vodaphone can they still scam me with this information?
I'm going into the Vodaphone shop in town after I have been to see Dennis this morning.
SORRY ADMIN - I AM STUPID!!! PLease move to Tea and Coffee.

There was something about this on TV this week but can't remember which programme - The One Show I think. They are usually after your bank details so if you didn't give them out you should be ok. Try googling The One Show - I'm pretty sure that all the major mobile providers were being targetted and gave interviews.

PS - whoever was presenting the article said not to bother with phone insurance as by the time you have paid out for year then you have paid out more than it would cost to buy a replacement phone, only saves money if nothing happens to your phone in the year though!!!

If it were Vodafone they SHOULD have asked you for your postcode and the pin/password on the account prior to discussing any deals with you. . If you have the full name of the person you spoke to I can see if they are an employee of Voda?
You have probably sorted by now though - there was a scam that was shown on the 'One Show' so it pays to be sure - feel free to pm me with the persons name and I can look into it for you

They talked about this on the radio - IT IS A SCAM. I do know how they get hold of your number and details (will advise if anyone wants to know) and YES, they are convincing but is all about them getting your money. If this ever happens GIVE AWAY NOTHING. Vera - suggest you tell the police (although I can't remember if the programme said to do that), your bank, and Vodafone - but what this scammers have done is, in all essentials, legal. |
