First the good news, vet doesn't think its a fracture now. For this reason he is still at home and not at the hospital. He will rest his toe on the ground and will put his foot down flat if you make him walk. He will allow us to pick his leg up. The vet has performed a very thorough examination and found nothing.
We don't know what it is though, he is in extreme pain and is very reluctant to move BUT this didn't stop him rubbing last night and his healing bottom is now raw again. The muscles on the left hand side of his quarters quiver when we make him walk. They quiver when Dennis even thinks we want to touch the area. He makes it known that he does not want the area touched. Having said that both the vet and I have had a good feel, all the while he is shrinking away from the hand, and can feel nothing. He even cringes when I VERY gently lift the rug over his quarters. I can't pull it into place like one would normally do, I have to place it and then gently lift it right over his quarters and lay it down. If I don't do this he practicly sits on the floor.
It is apparent that the source of pain is high up on his left gluteal muscle. I have already tried to contact Andy to find out where they gave him the steroid injection. If it is the same site then its too much of a coincidence not be be relevant. If it isn't and the vet doesn't think that there is anything to suggest it then we are back to square one.

Could he have pulled a muscle, Vera? That can be very paiful.
So glad it isn't a fracture.
All the best.

Hi Vera
You are not a bad person and its very unfortunate that this has all happened to you. I really hope dennis gets well soon. He hasnt been bitten by anything has he although sometimes you can have allergic reactions to steroid injections. I do promise I will come and see you as soon as I can and if there is anything i can do please let me know. Thinking of you both Emx. |

Hi Vera
I dont you but I've been following Dennis & your story for the past few years and you sound like a lovely person. I really hope this is something they can fix quickly for you both.
I have found that horrible things ONLY happen to nice people. Horrid people seem to get away with murder!!
You know what they say - What doen't kill you can only make you stronger
Love and best wishes

Firstly, let me just say that even though I don't know you Vera you sound like a fantastic person. Whatever Dennis throws at you he knows that his mum is there to sort him out and make him well again. That is a very special bond to have and he loves you for it. Sending huge get well hugs from me and Magic. |

Oh dear, Vera - Jack and I are really sorry to read of Dennis's problems and discomfort, not to mention all your worry. This latest lameness seems to me to be a muscle pull - he couldn't have caught the heel of "that leg" in the noseband of his headcollar, could he? Presuming he wears one. That can really pull the hamstrings - very painful. Just a thought. R&J. |

Thank you for all your messages and Pm's, some have literally brought me to tears - THANK YOU.
He seemed a bit more mobile at lunch time, most likely down to the Finadyne though. The look in his eyes is better too.
R - he doesn't wear a headcoller in the field, never needed to as he has to be one of the easiest horses in history to catch. |

That's good news today Vera. Stay strong, and stay positive, he'll know how you're feeling. What you've done for him is amazing. Many of us wouldn't have had the strength to carry on long ago. Take care Ros x |

That's better news, at least. I wonder if he's managed to pull something or tie up when he's been trying to rub? Could he have been rubbing on the ground? A friend's mare did herself some damage by doing that, similar situation to Dennis in fact. She's a very itchy horse, and managed to lame herself badly by rubbing.
Hope you get to the bottom of this soon, poor Dennis - and poor you, too. Hugs for you both. xx |

Really sorry to hear this latest on Dennis. I really feel for you Vera. Life is certainly not fair. After all you have both been through you both deserve much better than what life is throwing at you. Fate has an awful habit of kicking you when you are at your lowest. You have lots of people out there Vera rooting for both of you, some who know you, and some that don't, but every single one knows the dedication and love you have given to Dennis over the years. Hang on in there love, the only way now is UP for you both.

Vera - you are always so kind and non-judgemental; I always read your posts and follow the story of Dennis aka 'Zebedee'.
From your rotten childhood, you have managed to triumph as a wonderful, caring compassionate adult, it is sad that you feel you are not the person you could be.
You are wonderful - and Dennis is lucky to have you. x |

Vera, sorry to hear that Dennis is in the wars again. I'm not sure if this has been discussed but could he be allergic to his bedding. A few years ago a friends welsh mare out of the blue started to show similar symptoms that you have described. After a lot of vet bills, change in diet etc they decided to take her off of shavings and put her on straw, the problems cleared. This was a horse that had always been bedded on shavings. They tried again with the shavings as she is prone to laminitis and was eating the straw but the problems returned. Hope you manage to get a result, poor chap with all he's been through he doesn't deserve this.

It is too much of a coincidence to learn that the area that Dennis doesn't want touched, is the place that he had the steroid injection. Combined with the fact that there is now a slight hand size bulge in the area suggests that the two have to be connected.
The vet has suggested that he be allowed out in a tiny paddock so he spent the afternoon out in the sunshine. He came in bright eyed and perky but still terribly lame. He has the same reaction when I went to put his stable rug on, he really doesn't want me to touch the area and will shrink away even if look and don't touch.
All this time he has not once threatened to bite or kick despite being in obvious great pain. Bless him, I love him so much and it really hurts to see him like this.
Once again thank you for all of your messages of support, they mean a lot, an awful lot. I wish I had more confidence in me as a person, I might not take things so much to heart. It doesn't help that my blood has gone a bit haywire and am facing having injections every 2 days to sort it out.
But three things happened today which lifted my heart whilst I was doing the stables. The sun was shining, the lapwings were singing and the bumblebees were bumbling. |

Oh Vera Not been around much of late, and have just read this thread. You have certainly been through the mill lately, and I really feel for you. Dennis certainly does not do things by halves does he? He likes to keep you on your toes, and the vets in profit. Keep your chin up Love, and remember where I am should you need to rant. Your Friend Paul xXx
Ps Love and big hug for Dennis.
