Once the drugs kick in I feel certain Dennis will soon be on the up again. Looking on the bright side (and there hasn't been much of that lately) at least you now know the root cause and can begin eliminating the triggers of his allergy.

Just thought I'd mention that if you've eliminated molasses from his feed perhaps a different source of beet might help as Speedibeet is quite heavily molassed. I gather from a friend that French sugarbeet is now available in the UK, which is sugar extracted and molasses free. Would you like me to find out more?

Thanks for your thanks Vera. I don't feel I did much, but something about Dennis just tore at my heart strings!

All the best to you both, (and regards to your bank manager too!!)

Sorry not replied before, I've been in hospital today.

Mr Menace is doing OK. I can't say that I've noticed any improvement at all apart from the skin under his anus is less angry looking but that's because he can't rub it. Today was day 3 from having the steroid injection so hopefully its started working. I have decided that I am going to keep him out until at least the weekend. I may even keep him out until his bum is healed.

The worst part is under his anus and to the right where he literally rubbed the skin off. I have to keep this part really clean because of poo contamination. The whole area is raw, from either side of his dock, including the underside of his dock extending outwards by 6 inches to the left and about 10 inches to the right either side of his anus and this extends downwards by approx 8 inches. Lots of skin is still peeling off, as I clean the area it literally lifts off. So you see the affected area is quite large. Why it manifested itself so much around his bottom is anyone's guess, although he is itchy all over and enjoys a really good scratch when I change his rug.

Its really difficult to know what to do because the vet wants his rugs off as much as possible but he is clipped right out. Depending on the weather I will try leaving his rug off during the day at the weekend when I can keep a close eye on him.

All I can say is that I must have been a very bad person in a previous life because I cannot fathom for the life of me what the hell I have done to deserve todays events, let alone the last few years.

I had a terrible childhood, every bad thing you can imagine and then some, ruining me as an adult, affecting every aspect of my life. I have endured the most miserable depression, self harming, medications and treatment for years. I mourn for the child I should have been and I mourn for the adult I could have been.

Despite this I think I am basically a nice person, I am a loyal friend. I don't expect much out of life.

So when I get to the yard this evening and find Dennis so lame he can't put his leg to the floor I have to question 'why me' and 'why him'. Its so god damn unfair.

He is so lame on his near side hind that he can't bare weight on it. Nothing for it but to call the vet immediately. He will allow us to touch his lower leg but will sit on the floor to get away from even me touching his hindquarter. Its so bad we suspect a fracture. The vet has no idea what he has done, gave him a massive dose of Finadyne and will visit again first thing in the morning.

I don't know how much more I can take.

Bet certain people will be loving this.

Hi Vera

I hope your lads going to be on the mend soon - Humphry came in on three legs last week, he couldnt put any weight on his near side fore at all? No swelling & no heat anywhere.....turned out to be a deep routed abcess, but no heat? I was convinced he had broken something, but as soon as the pressure was released he became almost sound (apart from the rather large hole where it burst through the coronet band) very tricky to keep it clean.

sending you a big (((((((((((((((hug)))))))))))) I hope everything gets better soon.

Love Sarah

I'm so sorry for both dennis and you, having had the human version until my late teens (bandaged 24/7 to the knees and elbows to stop infection) you're vet is right keeping cool is so important and to the point of cold as any heat on the skin starts irritation and once the tiniest bit of moisture from sweat starts to happen it drives you to the point of insanity, i ended up seeing a chinese herbalist near leicester square in the early nineties, it took time but the treatments (all topical) did work in the end but still have problems with keeping shoes and boots on for any period of time.

So sorry to hear this Vera. Suspect laminitis ---steroid induced laminitis can manifest itself in uncharacteristic ways.

I really hope whatever it is that lovely boy will be better soon.

Oh no, Vera, I hope Dennis will be OK. Poor lad, he's been through so much. Fingers crossed it is just an abscess. Or laminitis as Zan suggests - steroids can bring that on and sometimes there's no alternative but to use steroids.

Oh heck Vera, that's all poor Dennis needs
My initial thoughts are the same as "Big Mover".....possibly an abscess
Really hope it's something simple like that as opposed to a fracture!!

I am so sorry to hear your latest news, Vera, it always seems to happen to the people (and horses!) who least deserve it.

One thing I thought of for Dennis's itch, have you tried dead sea salts. You put them in the bath water (for humans) and have a leisurely soak. It is supposed to releive exema, psorisis, etc so might be worth trying on Dennis. Not sure where sells them but you could find them on the internet. I bought some for my husband who has psorisis but they didn't do any good as he never used them!!!!!! Someone I worked with swore by them and they weren't very expensive.

Anyone who would be pleased at your distress needs a kick up the a*se.

Try and keep positive although I know that is easier said than done. I wish there was something I could do for you.

Big hugs coming your way and healing vibes to Dennis.

Love

Barbara
