I do hope it is the injection and that it will subside soon and he will have one less problem.
Vera, you are amazing; you carry on against all the odds even though you must be so depressed about it all. I wish I lived nearer so that I could help even it was just to give you a hug and tell you to keep on trucking, it will all come right in the end.
Do try the desd sea salts if you can get them; they weren't expensive and came highly recommended. They really helped itchy exema so they may help Dennis. |

Vera, have been following this thread and my heart goes out to you and your long suffering Dennis. Huge hugs for you both.
Just a thought, if a swelling has appeared at the steroid injection site....feel it may well be an abscess developing, especially as Dennis is in such agony, poor boy.
A friend had her colt castrated...and the vet injected in his hind quarter.....Approx three weeks later, he was showing the same extreme pain, tremors and lameness you describe and a swelling that was about four inches across. When the vet was called..sure enough it was an abscess!! How long has it been since he had his steroid injection?
Do hope his problems are solved and his pain can be eased very soon. You must be absolutely at your wits end. Stay strong for Dennis Vera and hopefully all will be well, soon.

He spent the day out today in a tiny paddock and NAKED!! At one point he really wanted to roll but he just could not do it. He's moving even better today bit is still very lame.
Interestingly he now has two bulges on his quarters, one high up on his gluteals (where the injection was) and another below it and to the right. I shall phone the vet who has been treating his skin tomorrow and have a chat. Not least because the I need the vet to say that it is connected to the jab and therefore linked to the allergy treatment so I can claim for it. The vet who came out to treat his lameness will only say that it 'could' be connected. Knowing insurance companies this will be their get out clause and say that it is a separate claim meaning I have to pay another excess.
He had the steroid injection last Sunday and became lame on Thursday.
Once again I have to say thank you to all my AL friends (and some who post on another site) for all your support and advice. Is it wonderful how friends pull together at times of need |

Phew, what a relief for you to find a likely cause other than a fracture
May need the rump scanning to search for deep infection?
Hope he continues to improve. |

Hi Vera, Have only just caught up with this thread. What a nightmare. I'm so sorry to hear about all the problems and hope Dennis will be on the mend soon. I agree with what a lot of others have said - it's always the good people that get all the problems. Don't lose heart, we all think you're great, but most important of all, Dennis clearly loves you! Had a chat with Andy this afternoon and he wants Dennis to go to horsepital on Wednesday for a scan, if it is an abscess he will lance it there and then. He hopes that after a good flushing I would be able to take him home again.
After chatting with Andy we decided to leave him out tonight. The lameness is much worse in the mornings so leaving him in a very small paddock will hopefully keep him more comfortable.
I had to hold his feed bucket this evening as he really didn't want to eat his tea. He ate it if I held it. Can't say I blame him because he must be able to taste all the tablets in eat - 20 anti histamine and 20 steroid tablets can't taste very nice. |

Heather came to visit today and he didn't even want us to look at his bottom, let alone his bulge poor man. He is still very lame. as I showed her his sore bum more skin flaked off but the skin underneath is looking much better. She really winced when she saw the skin under his anus!
He's really going off his feed which isn't like him at all. This evening I gave him half the normal amount of readigrass and double the speedibeet and he did eat his dinner but not with his usual enthusiasm.
In many ways I want the vet to find an abscess tomorrow because I can speak from personal experience of the relief once an abscess is lanced.
Thank you for visiting us today Heather, I am very lucky to have friends like you, you're a gem |

Hoping to hear some better news tomorrow after your visit to the vets Vera. I so agree, an abscess is often preferable to other problems, and if it's lanced, the relief can be instantaneous, so let's hope that is what is causing his lameness. He (and you) have enough to worry about. Glad to hear though that the skin is looking better under the flaking.
I truly admire you for remaining so positive - exactly what poor Dennis needs.

I'm sure the feed reluctance is just the medication in it. Lance just refuses a feed if it has even one sachet of bute in, no matter what I put in it to disguise the taste.
Hope for improvement tomorrow.. |

It's always a pleaseure to visit you and Dennis Vera That is some bump on Dennis' quarter and it's obviously very sore indeed. I do hope that they can find some relief for him tomorrow. As for his itchies, looks like it's healing well, you are doing a fab job(as usual), just hope you get to work out what set him off as that stable of his won't stand up to much more punishment! |

Hope Dennis is feeling a bit better today
Can he have any honey or is that not allowed on his sugar free diet? I was just thinking some manuka honey might make his feed taste better and be good for his sore bits. |

The bump does sound like an abcess or 'injection reaction'. My mare had one on her neck which was the size of a satsuma. Real shame as it has scarred her and she has a permanent lump there. It was very very sore and quite a mess for a long time, of course the vet was very apologetic and I was quite unhappy at the time that the area was not shaved/cleaned before the injection.
This warmer weather is fantastic for getting the rugs off, hopefully it will really help Dennis to get the air to him.
Sorry you're not so well too Vera, but as you say, birds/bees and sunshine really do lift the spirits and that has to help with recovery. X |

I'll be alright, it just inconvenient at the moment with Dennis not being 100%. Bu then you could say that its a good thing that I am worrying about him and not myself. I'm in hospital on Tuesday for some new blood and stuff so I should be feeling a lot better after that.
Dennis lump/bulge as the size of half a large grapefruit. I'm going to take my camera this afternoon, if they will let me take pictures...
Giving loads more speedibeet is doing the trick regards him eating his feed. He's not allowed honey - he's not allowed anything but speedibeet and grass as in readigrass, field grass and hay. |

As you can see it turned out to be an abscess
I've left him at the hospital so they can flush it again tomorrow. |
