Has anyone read in horse and hound about the people that rescueing horses from france, spain etc.
i'm sorry don't mean to sound cold hearted, but i completely agree with them.
What about all the british horses that need help.
In these times i certainly think charity should begin at home!!

I couldn't agree more Nikki. The simple fact is that the French eat horse meat, the horses where bred to be eaten. Why 'save' them when there are plenty of horses in the UK that need 'saving'. |

Could not agree more... If you want to save horses, save the British horses in our own Country first !! There are so many, in need of a caring home and TLC.
Only wish we were in a position to save some of these very sad `oldies` who have been cast aside as they can no longer breed or work and owners seemingly not caring what happens to them as long as they can glean a few more pounds, from their loyal friends!!
We only have twelve acres, so absolutely no space as we are at bursting point with all fifteen stables occupied, and have several pensioners, well into their `twenties` and they are going nowhere

Here here, charity begins at home! I actually read an interesting post on the of these french rescue websites & someone was actually questioning what they do & why did they not consider rescueing UK horses, as there are plenty who go through horse sales that would benefit from a good home, their answer, because people werent confident enough to buy from sales & you could end up with a dodgy one....errr & you cant with a french one?? Id much rather go & see what i was buying rather than rely on the word of someone else, and dont even get me started on the prices, silly money for some of these horses! There was one on there a couple of months ago with navicular & they wanted quite abit for it, sorry, but it wasnt worth the cost of the transport to bring over. I do feel sorry for all these horses, but i just think we should look after the horses here first!!! |

What I got from the srticle was less about charity beginning at home and more the fact that these charities are in fact contributing to the problem?
By paying 'over the odds' for these horses that are bred for meat, they are in fact encouraging them to keep breeding!
The issue is more of live transportation to slaughter!!
I agree - there are many unwanted and uncared for horses and ponies on our own shores who desperately need our help!! |

Totally agree with everyone on here. The more horses that people "rescue" the more that will be bred, and European dinner plates will still have horsemeat on them. For the price that people seem to be paying for these horses, the money would be much better being put into charities inthis country, and would help a lot more horses than are being helped at the moment

Totally agree that the more we breed, even with a strict policy, the more will end up being rescued etc.
We have three foals due this year and will not be putting any of our mares back in foal, we intend to "hang on" to the foals until the right home etc comes along. We were offering our boy at stud BUT will honour the breedings already booked (because they are for keeps). But will continue with our dressage and enjoyment and wait until the market picks up in future years. Sorry but our priority is the welfare of the Arab breed and not its over population of stock with no home. |

Jude if only everyone was as sensible as you are with so many horses needing homes and an grotesque excess of TB's being dumped or sent to slaughter as 2 year old's because their owners won't pay for the one's who aren't winning is really bad. I will never breed as I couldn't sell the foal due to fearing where he/she might end up and would not want to make a mistake if my consience were to be misguided as it has been in the past by people's promises which have been in similar worth as crumbling pie crusts. In my current situation I can only do the best I can for the two I have, my eyes are open and there is no nievity in my thoughts as to what is happening to all these excessively bred horses of all breeds at the moment.
Charity does indeed begin at home and while I do feel deeply for the horses abroad you only have to look around to see that many equines here need help. |
My horse is my very best friend. Nothing in the world can separate us. When he dies I know he'll be waiting for me at the gate... just like always.

Jude is right This is the year to promote the Arab by showing in all discipline so on the pick-up more clients will be interested .Spend the stud fees on training and showing to attract attention to your stud.IMO |
