Really Sabine, I had no trouble gettin it!

Another suggestion was to cover him in Pig Oil with flowers of sulphur in it. Anyone know anything about this?

I know pig oil is the stuff that you rub on pigs to moisturise their skin and not actually made from pigs!!! It is very useful on hairy legs to get rid of mites.

The Homeopathy tablets are
Arsenicum 1M
Apis 200
Sulphur 200
Calc carb 200

Anyone know what any of that means?

Hi V, a couple of years ago my Den had an itch - all over. I did the BB, Malaseb bath etc routine, then he came up in little scabby spots everywhere. We did skin scrapes which didn't show anything then the vet eventually gave him an injection of a cattle medication (the name I can't remember but it wasn't licensed for use in horses and was a last resort sort of act and I had to sign to say I agreed to its use - she did assure me it wouldn't do him any harm and was often used). Worked like a charm tho - itching stopped within days and no re-occurence since.

Still to this day I don't know what it was but Vet reckons probably a mite of some sort but it just didn't appear on the scrape - none of the others got it. forgot to say he had a full set of bloods done as well which showed nothing.

Hiya J, you're not the only one to suggest the stuff for cows!

I bathed Dennis again with the Malaseb today and then hot oiled him. I also applied No Rub (made by Leovet) to his dock area which came highly recommended.

Now I don't want to speak too soon but tonight for the first time in weeks he ate his tea and then stood munching his hay without having a good roll or rubbing his bottom - while I was there.

Oh Vera, poor Dennis and poor you. You certainly seem to have covered everything and more!

Hassan had homeopathic treatments for his feet and they certainly did the trick where conventional medications failed. I believe the numbers following the name just show the degree of dilution, because (as you surely know) the point of homeopathy is to introduce miniscule amounts of a substance so the patient gets the effect of the treatment but not the affect of the substance.

Fingers crossed for you both...hope your abdomen is back to full bendyness soon.

Hi Kim, someone sent me a lovely detailed PM explaining the ingredients and what they do . Its seems that if anything will help they will.

Abdomen is coming along nicely but now I'm losing my hair. They tell me it will grow back but might take a year!!!!

hi vera, what a nightmare you are havingpoor dennis! and poor you!
I know you have had lots of suggestions so i held off adding mine, but minty was frequently itchy for no apparent reason,i spoke to a homeopathic vet a few months ago and she suggested i try feeding marigold flowers (calendula) well i have and there has been no itching at all on top off that her coat is looking fantastic and her rugs dont seem to have rubbed at all this year(she is normally a nightmare everything rubs her no matter how well fitting or how many different rugbibs we tried and believe me we have spent a fortune and tried all sorts!) her mane and tail also seem to be growing faster and stronger.
I get the marigold flowers from equus health (i think thats it, will check if you are interested) they are about £12 and last about a month, you feed a fairly large handfull morning and night either in a feed or straight from your hand, most horses love them I really hope you find a soloution soon it really muust be driving you both mad
hugs all round i think!

I'm afriad he's not any better, he's no worse but no better either.

I am keeping the rubbing at bay by washing his tail every other day with either Malaseb or Tea Tree Shampoo. Every day I smother under his dock and entire bottom including buttocks with either Aloe Vera or Sudocreme. I apply the No Rub every day to the roots of the hair on his tail. Being a liquid is it much easier than trying to get cream/gel to the roots.

He's also getting the homeopathic tablets every day as well as herbs.

My boy had a really itchy bum / tail last summer. While some of it could be put down to midges it wasn't really sweet itch.

I tried loads of tablets, lotions and potions but the only one that really helped him was a cream called Hopes Relief. It's not cheap and it's designed for people with eczema but it worked for him. You can buy it off ebay.

Hope Dennis gets rid of his itch soon

You haven't got any hens have you? Chicken mites come out at night to bite then go home again.

Itchy sheath is v common reason for tail rubbing, but you should be able to tell from his behaviour when cleaning it.

Hi Vera,
Just a few comments re. Dennis and his itching.
Is there any barley in his feed? Some horses are quite allergic to
it.
Did you try injectable Ivermectin as this treats skin nematodes.
Yes, be careful with Benzol Benzoate. It is good but again some
horses react to it, especially chestnuts - I do know Dennis is grey!
Ask Kathy the injection that is used on Siloran.
Best of luck to you and Dennis. R

Thank you for thinking about Mr Menace. No news I'm afraid, no better but no worse.

I am wondering if it has become habitual, baring in mind that he doesn't rub fast like he has an itch. He almost sits down, pushing against the wall very hard and slowly wriggles his bottom while pulling a gooey face.

He's still having the homeopathic tablets, Mark said they can take three weeks to work and he's been having them for two. He's also still having Echinacea and Nettle, both of which Mark said were fine to feed alongside the tablets.

He's booked for a checkup on the 10th March. Once the vet has seen him again we will decide if it will be worth doing the skin scraping/ allergy testing route.

Ella, funny you say that but I clean his sheath again last weekend. I can't get up there to clean it really deep but I squirt baby oil via a syringe up there so it should penetrate to the back! And no hens, do have a semi tame partridge and a few pheasants who visit to eat the bird seed fallen on the yard.

Ron, not tried injecting ivermectin, will speak to the vet about it. No barley in his feed either. Several people have warned me about BB, especially on sensitive skinned horses which he definitely is. Will give Kathy a call. Several people have mentioned an injection to get rid of mites but he doesn't have mites!!

Hi Vera, your comment above...strange ..and possibly no connection!!

When a mare is in labour, she does exactly as you say above. Can only imagine due to internal irritation as contractions are setting in
All mares we have foaled go through this routine.

Don`t panic........not suggesting Dennis is pregnant...but wonder if he has ever had an internal exam./scan ?? and maybe has something..which is causing this irritation...know it is a long shot, but maybe worth investigating.??

That REALLY sounds like itchy male parts - sheath or scrotum. Does he pull the same face when you scratch between his hind legs? Or lift one up?

Wash with very dilute washing-up liquid. Strong soaps are too irritant.

It Sounds like your yearling had the same problem as my girls Dermaphytes is a fungal infection of the hair, skin (& nails) but they don`t have the typical ringworm symptoms !

Vera i hope Dennis is cured from his itching ASAP X
