Glad I don't live near you with the prices you are being charged!! We make our own hay, but bought in straw at £1 a bale but we did collect it straight off the field. I can imagine it would be more expensive if we had it delivered. Lisa |

i paid £105 today for 6 round bales of hay collected, which is extremely cheap. usually about £30 for hay which has been crap, and mostly good but again not the best. the hay is good but not the best. straw is £30.00 for a euro bale. i also feed devon haylage £6.00 a bag lasts 2 possible 3 days. i usually make my own hay but last year my 2 mares were out on lease and not due home till the october, so i let a friend use one field for a couple of months till she found somewhere else as that was my summer grazing, then i had to get one of my mares back home with her foal at foot so i had to put them on the winter field where my hay was growing. going of the subject a bit can anyone advise me my friend hadnt poo picked from the time she had moved in so my horses could not graze that field so my winter supply of hay was gone.i heard rumours that my friends foal had somthing white coming out of its nose possible lung worm which is why i have and will not graze the horses on it till its been sorted out, can any one tell me what should be done ,i have asked her to poo pick with a machine, harrow, lime, fertilize, and harrow again. |

We're in East Kent.
£2.20 per small bale of hay. Produced on the farm where Marygold is kept, so I know it's good quality. Farmer also puts it in the store for us when we run out.
I don't use much straw - only for bedding in the trailer to mop up, and he charges 50p for a small bale. |

In the North East we are paying £25 per round bale of lower quality haylage - you cannot get any shavings at a reasonable price due to the slowdown in the construction industry (less timber being milled!)

Ooops. You aren't going to believe this but I pay £8.50 for a large bale and I live in Devon where everything seems to be expensive. Most people pay fifteen for a bale. Straw is £1 for a normal small bale. |

In South Lincolnshire, we are paying £2.50/bale (small) of good quality Timothy grass hay or £22 for big round bales. Haylage in the big round bales are £18..all from the same supplier, he doesn't make small bales. All delivered. His straw is £1.50 - £2.00/bale.

Scottish prices...
I paid £90 per tonne of beautiful Carse of Stirling hay back in the autumn. That's about 40 bales to the tonne. The horses love it.
Bought 2 tonnes just to be safe!
The farmer stores it until I need it then it costs £1 to £1.50 to have it delivered to the island.
I heard yesterday that farmers are paying £100 per tonne for straw!!

Paying £2.50 a bale of hay in Mid Cheshire.
Cant help with straw because I use Shavings but I beleive straw as shot up in price because of the shortage in shavings!!
