Hi, Has anyone ever had their horse diagnosed with Peritonitis? My TB x pony has been in the equine hospital for the past 11 days being treated for peritonitis. Website info does not paint a rosie picture of the illness but the vets feel positive that she can overcome this and will get better. My arab mare is missing her friend like crazy.

Hi - thanks for your replies. My little mare is still showing a high white blood cell count and has now been on antibiotics for 14 days, and in hospital for 9. She is clinically well but still not right. It is good to know that your animals made a full recovery - have they had any laminitis or colic since their peritonitis? |

Is your mare insured for vets bills? I used to work in an equine veterinary hospital and we had a couple of cases of peritonitis that weren't responding to iv antibiotics and they had a ga and an exploratory laparotomy and had their abdomen flushed with a large amount of sterile saline. They were stiched up and treted as a colic surgery with antibiotics and all recovered and went on to lead normal lives. |

Hi Flaxen Thank you for your reply. My mare is home from hospital - still on antibiotics and being retested on Wednesday for bloods. Her wbc count was decreasing so she was allowed home and fingers crossed she will get the all clear on Christmas Eve.Merry Christmas to you all. |

Sorry not to have seen this before. My youngest, 9 this year, had peritonitis last summer. She was ill on 31st July and was finally given the all clear in October! She had a high white cell count on each blood test, gradually getting higher, until the vet put her onto an iodide (think it's potassium iodide) and finally, after 6 weeks or more on that, her blood tests came back normal. She wasn't at the surgery (although the vet threatened that) but also wasn't insured for vet bills. Over £1k later.... Absolute nightmare, having such an ill horse - I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Fingers crossed your amre got the all clear. Mine is still looking a bit rough, but she's full of energy and is fat enough, just not as shiny as usual (even allowing for her winter coat). |

Very sorry to hear this. My friends arab got it when he was gelded and he was very very sick - but that was now about 3 years ago and he is a healthy happy glowing example of a beautiful arab. All my very best of luck and healing vibes to you |

So sorry to hear about your horse, my beloved mare got it last March and was so ill, she ended up having surgery and only six weeks after the surgery she broke her jaw as well, I was so worried and was convinced I would lose her, it is a year later and she has travelled to France now, it has taken a long long time for her to recover fully, but she is fit and well now although her shape has changed and her coat not what it used to be, so just give it time as I say Milly is fine and well but a year later there is still a little room for imprevement but she is 17 years old now. Thinking of you at this worrying time and fingers crosses that your horse makes a full recovery |

Interesting that you say that about her shape and coat, Gerri - I've noticed Rash doesn't look her normal self yet although I hope she'll look better once spring comes. She's only 8 this year so maybe will get her shape back a bit quicker than an older horse would. |
