I have just plaited my horses mane in order to try and encourage it all to grow on the same side. I have put in 5 single plaits along his neck, nice and loose near the crest. It seems quite determined to grow in every possible direction so I dont think overnight and unplait tomorrow will be enough to sort it.
Can anyone tell me how long I can safely leave the plaits in as I dont want to cause any hair loss?
The last and only time i put plaits in my boys mane chunks came out the next day when i took the bands off This winter the top half is falling to the right side and the bottom is falling to the left so i'm leaving his over the winter and early spring i'm going to put a slicker on to encourage it to all lay on the correct side.just my experience and my opinion though
He'll tell you if he's hot/itchy etc. You can safely leave ina couple of days of he's not the sort to mess with them. Once they start to look frayed they'll tangle up more than you expect.
Take them out and brush a good light oil (like SSS) through from roots to ends and replait once it starts misbehaving again.
Adding a neck like the thermacel / quilted ones will help guide it over. I'm off lycra slickers and loving the separate necks

Thank you it worked brilliantly! Unfortunately he has now cheese sliced half his hoof in the field yesterday. Goodness knows how as Ive never seen him kick out in his life before. Think they could injure themselves in a padded stable sometimes!
I used to use strong hair gel and then did an 'arab' plait for a few days, however now I just leave the mane on the side it wants to grow on, as there is apparently no ruling to say that manes have to be on the off-side for showing.
