I have just had a small load of hay delivered, prices are zooming up in this area and our costs have nearly doubled on hay and tripled on straw. However our hay guy has been talking to us about the prices etc and confirmed that three large suppliers in our area have refused to sell any more until after Christmas, not because they are worried about how much they have, but to try and make it so hard to come by that they can increase their prices to . . . . Wait for it . . . . £7 - £8 for a small bale. I find this most distastefull, the rotten thieving ( cant put what i want to call them ) i hope it backfires on them, that people find other sources or alternatives and they dont sell what they have, i hope that they are left with a rotting pile of poor hay that they cant give away next year, and i hope they loose all their goodwill with people and it takes them 5 years to build it back up. Thanks for letting me rant. Rant over, i can go and grab a cuppa now.

thats just rude - but people will find other sources... they'll have to and a lovely, non money grabbing farmer will reap the benefits and build a massive loyal customer base from it!! what area are you in? |

Absolute daylight robbery, there should be a law against it That really makes my blood boil.
We make our own hay, haylage and straw and we sell to regular customers, but have only raised the price by 25p for small bales in the last 10 years or so. Looks like we'll never get rich but at least we have a conscience.
Another thing that I am totally amazed at is the rising price of horse feed. Last year I paid £13.00 for 2 bags of feed (for example), this year for exactly the same feed it's costing me £19.00 - where is the justice and where is the profit going???

Yes, it is underhand, but it is also just business, but not the sort that is going to keep customers coming back.
It happens here too, but only by a dollar or so. Last year before Christmas it was $3, after, it was $4. Off the field I was picking hay up for $2 a bale (65lb bales)
Can you name these dealers? There shouldn't be anything wrong with doing that should there?

Money is the root of all evil.
I would rather be skint and happy than be like that. Like you said, hope it backfires on them and they are left with a load of hay they cant shift.

Hi. I am in York, seriously thinking of renting a field and cutting my own next year, i know you can have a bad year but it costs about 80p a bale that way, plus the cost of rent. Costs of feed have shot up here to, sugar beet been the biggest jump i think, Speedybeet has gone up from £7.50 in August to £9.50 last week, and that has nothing to do with grass. Pants. I do understand its just business but its always us lot that pay, and its something that we cant do without and therefore we have little choice, economic climate over here is bad enough without these type of businesses. |

£7 - &8!!!!! You can buy Horsehage/Equilage for £6!
I buy my hay in Leeds for £2/bale. It has been the same price for the last 15 years, something that hasn't been hit by inflation

Hi Ella, would you be able to tell me where abouts in leeds it is. It might be worth us trying to get a trailer and collecting some. Or paying them to deliver? Thanks very much. |

Good job you lot don't live in Newmarket!! :))
Some hay here is £10 plus per bale BUT it is that good us normal horse owners wouldn't have to feed anything else but hay and the bale sizes are 1/2 an normal bale bigger than our regular small bales!
I get my straw for free from my farmer neighbour but am on sawdust. My hay is £2.25 a bale at the moment although I can buy other expensive grades if I want.
This isn't the first time hay merchants have stopped selling before Chrimbo to force the prices up after, it happened a few years ago too.....I think it is disgracful behaviour and it is always the equestrians that suffer, you don't usually see Farmer Joe the Cattle farmer having problems with their hay suppliers do you.....
Alistair has a good idea, wish I had a big barn! :)) |
