I've noticed Lilly seems to be carrying her tail to one side.I had a look and she does favour one side but she carries it on both depending on how she's feeling I spose. But she only really does it in walk, trot or when she has her rug on.
I thought back pain but then I thought wouldn't she carry it permanently to one side if that was the case? and she doesn't seem in pain. Arggg I'm so confused and slightly worried.Any ideas and do any of your Arabs carry their tails to one side
Any help greatly appreciated

Ihave had several that carry their tails to one side, its pretty common. If they hold it permanently to one side, even at rest then it is called a wry tail, which is considered a fault but does not affect the horse at all. Doing it at any speed or in an interesting situation (something is getting their attention) I wouldnt worry about it unless you have reason to believe she has any sort of pain. |

Hi ya
one of mares always carrys her tail to one side...i thought it was strange at first but she is a happy little mare and when she prances around it kinks completly to one side and when shes in season she loves being stroked and brushed and if you brush her bum or tail she holds it up to the side and looks at me as if to say 'come on then mum, wheres the stallion? im ready' My vet who AI her thought it was funny cos when he scannedher she would hold her tail up to one side to he could enter his hand in to her, she actually enjoyed it!! dirty cow.
I wouldn't worry enless its a new thing thats shes started to do or if shes showing other signs of pain like putting her ears back, arching back etc
im interested in what the experts have to say though as ihave often wondered why one of my mares does it and the other doesnt?

Ahhh problem solved, taking after Daddy it seems . My old Arab never did so I hadn't really thought about it. Kirsti she's like a teddy bear at the minute, she's very sweet, it quites suit her. I haven't taken any recent pics due to the crap weather but I'll take some soon and make a thread. There'll be lots more next summer when she's going to start to be shown. xx |

Our first colt did it, but as he improved condition and with age it straightened. some are just down to condition / weakness, others coud be a small injury to the muscles and the others - seems to be just the way they are. |

We used to have an lovely arab cross, who ALWAYS carried her tail to one side. Never seemed to bother her though, she was always happy. |

Celebrity has always done it. From the moment I get on, his tail goes straight up and over to one side, and stays there until we get home. |

My boy does this and has always done so. Tail carried to the right when we went to view him, tail to the right on all his racing video's and tail definitely to the right when in the ring nowadays. Was told that there might be a back problem with him but he's been thoroughly checked over and no problem with his back so think it's just a trait, no photographs of his parents so don't know if it's a family trait or just an araby thing but he seems happy enough and it doesn't bother me. Nice to know he's not the only odd ball though !

I once read an article about this and it said it is quite normal for an arabian. |
