The old saying about Highlands was that they were the poor mans arab....They call that cross a Macarab!!!!!He looks fab and its an ideal cross for endurance...... |

Well I must be that poor man then (only poor as he has cost me so much...lol) He is a gorgeous foal, Congratulations! I have met a few HiPo x Arab's and they are truly wonderful, a little more upbeat than a pure HiPo. |

I went to visit this little chap yesterday and WOW! The photo doesn't do him any justice - he is absolutely stunning! At 3 weeks he is starting to look rather more substantial and Highlandy in the body, but with the most perfect little Arab head, beautiful curly ears and huge dark eyes. And he even has his Daddy's 'Russian' Arab trot!
His lovely owner Sue has taken some more photos, which I'll try to post on here as soon as I receive them. Sue came in for a fair amount of flak from the Highland people for breeding this mare to an Arab rather than a Highland (Highlands are quite rare and outcrossing is rather frowned upon), but those who have seen this foal are now offering to eat not only their hats but their entire wardrobes! |

He is a lovely foal and I love his curly ears!!
My friend has a Highland mare who she has bred 4 foals from by her Arab Stallion. They have all been at least 15.1hh at maturity and real characters. It is a lovely cross and I can't wait to see how this little guy matures. Well done, it's lovely to hear that Tobago is siring stunning part breds as well as the pures! |

Thanks Sue! Welcome to AL! And thank you for a lovely visit - I could happily have stayed playing with Emerald and Onyx all day!
Here are a couple more cute pics that I somehow failed to post earlier:

Kate, I love him, hes looks to have an amazing charactor! At first i thought he looked just like and Arab with his beautiful head and ears, then I saw the side view of his body and can see hes going to be a substancial young man when he grows up. I think he will be very special, especially with this unuasual colouring hes expected to get. Hope you are well and taking good care of yourself. You must be over the moon with the success of Tobago's first foals, they are utterly outstanding and I am a big fan. xx |

Gosh - thank you spirit! I'm so pleased that you like Tobago and his babies!
Do go and see Onyx if you get a chance - the photos don't do him justice; he really is very special: everyone who sees him is totally smitten. And as you say, he has the pretty Araby head and refinement, but still with plenty of bone and substance from his lovely mum.
I think he is expected to make at least 15.1hh - his legs are very long compared to his mother's. Does anyone know the formula for calculating expected height? I can never remember it! |

What a super foal. The moment I saw the colour I loved it immediately.
Definately has daddies presence.
You must be thrilled.
This is a cross that I must admit I had never heard of but it really works xx |

updated pictures of Onyx and his coat of many colours - his face is turning dun, as are his legs, and his body is an interesting shade of apricot. I can also see darker dun in his mane.

LOL Sue - I wonder if they'll have to invent a whole new colour-term for Onyx: 'Apricot Dun'???
Gosh - he has grown! How tall do you think he will be?
Oh - could you remind me of the name of the Highland Pony website/forum - I've lost the link?
I'm back in Oxford again now so will try to come and visit you and Onxy again sometime soon, if I may? |
