Just arrived!
The breeder and I kept the identity of the sire a secret, so people on another website were asked to guess the breed of the sire from photos of the foal - they immediately guessed not only 'Arab', but specifically 'Tobago'!!!
Mum is a gorgeous Highland Pony - the breeder wanted to breed something a bit taller, more refined and more athletic for her son to ride...so she's very pleased with this foal...and the curly ears are a bonus!

Is it a colt or filly Kate? Either way absolutely gorgeous baby...I really like the Arab x Highland, when it works. Which this one obviously has
Congratulations to the owner

Thank you! I will pass on your congratulations to Sue, who is a super-nice person as well as a talented breeder! She convinced me last year that this cross would work, and she was right!
At the moment she's trying to find any evidence of Highland Pony blood in this foal, but I think as he matures he will have considerable substance from his dam, and with any luck some of her ponyish good sense as well!
Apparently his colour will be 'fox dun', which I've never even heard of - has anyone ever seen a fox dun? (Mum is a sort of smokey, silvery dun.) |

How lovely!!
The arab x highland cross is indeed supposed to be a very sucessful one, so it'll be interesting to see how this little one develops.

Hi Kate, Yes I have seen a fox dun in my life. You can certainly see the Tobago look - what a fabulous boy he will be. Tobago is most certainly stamping his stock with lovely heads and ears. Hope to send some pics soon of Mobago - Paula took some this week-end. Di. |

Well you kept that one close to your chest. What a little beauty. It seems his lordship can do no wrong with his babies, what a star. |

Goodness, how does he manage to stamp his offspring so well! I think if you crossed him with a giraffe, the resulting baby would still look like a mini tobago! Another smashing baby, i really don't think i've seen one i don't like! Ros x |

Lovely foal kate, We realy approve of the Highland Arab cross, have had a visiting Highland mare several years running and her foals by our boys are just super. the dun baby this year by Vlacq Khazad is especially pleasing. This summer she sent her Highland T.B. cross mare to him so we are hoping for another dun the mare is siver dun and one I would happily add to our brood mare fleet, such a good looking lady. Tobago is certainly sireing some gorgeous babies and I'm pleased to see you are happy to have non arab mares to him. I feel the way to win over people hooked on other breeds is to encourage them to use arab sires.

Gosh - thanks everyone!
I know what you mean mogwai and alethea - I've just seen another pic of this foal with his mum (will try to get it posted here later - I'm on my mother's computer) and it looks like she has an adopted Arab foal! The only evidence of Highland blood at the moment is that he has more bone than you'd expect on an Arab foal, and is perhaps a bit more chunky - but otherwise it seems Tobago has done his best to produce yet another mini-me!
I'm beginning to think we could cross him with a hippo and still get an elegant little Araby baby LOL!
I must try to get the other photos up, cos the mum is a very gorgeous Highland - I knew nothing about Highlands till I met her, but I've rather fallen in love with them! |
