When i was achild (millions of yrs ago ) there were lots of purebred arab 'ponies' but there are far fewer now, why is that? I've been looking for a purebred for a friend but she's only wanting a max of 14hh and I can't find one. Are they not around anymore or am I looking in the wrong places? I know when I was a child it was unusual to find a 15.2hh arab but now they are the norm (and some much bigger). Is it just selective breeding and the small but mighty are no longer bred? Please help..........

Shame you aren't in Canada. My Amurath mare is only JUST knocking on 14h and I know of several others of the same Bask breeding which are small too.
If your friend was willing to go up a couple of inches she would have far more choice I should think. |

I've got one, mare about 14 hands, but not thinking of selling her just now. My mares are all from 14 hands to 14.3, smaller Arabs are there but anyone selling will exaggerate the height as small is no longer fashionable. |

No longer fashionable, although My little man is not quite purebred (3/4) he's well well well under 14 hh let alone 15hh I still ride my little man, cause he can run the pants off a Kangaroo (lol) is easy to mount & dismount & is just plain better than all those big horses
But I guess your right with the regular population small, tough & wirey is no longer fashionable,
still I really hope you manage to find your friend a smaller Arabian, just keep putting it out there & one will eventually turn up, some ones bound to have one they are willing to sell so they can get one of those whoppers

I have a 13.3hh purebred mare, with a very illustrious pedigree. She is very 'true to type' and I would love to breed from her one day. The problem I have is finding stallions small enough for her to accommodate!!!
She is the 3rd pic in my signature, the bay.

I saw one (mare) on the AL sales pages recently at about 14hh. A bay, but not sure if she's backed. They're certainly getting bigger. I have a three year old that must be 15.3hh already - Russian breeding, and my Polish Russian is also 15.3hh. I think it's the eastern European blood that's doing it as the Crabbets still seem to be quite a bit smaller. |

I'm sure its alot to do with breeding, but our feeding has become much improved also! I think people do exagerate also because they think everyone want a big arab! All of my purebred brood mare's are between 14HH and 14.3HH and my stallion is 15HH but the off spring are bigger!
Trudi if you PM me I may be able to help! |

Hi, small arab's are great i have a 13.3hh but rides more like a horse than a pony and a 14.1hh and a 14.2hh, my 9 yr old daughter already rides the 13.3hh and loves it, they can make fantastic riding ponies for competant children and give them the chance to grow up on an arab, the big downside is the showring!! If you take a 13.3hh/14hh in nobody seems to look twice because of their size regardless of the performance! Why? height isn't everthing! My stallion is 15.2hh and the 13.3hh foals to him easily so don't be put off by using a bigger stallion. Whatever their height their versatility wins hands down, my daughter will always be an arab rider thanks to my little Lily!!! |

I'm so glad they are still around in some numbers. I have seen them (the boy I used to own was 14.1) but they just don't appear for sale although you may be right in that the owners may have exagerated the height to appeal to a wider selection of people.

many advertsied at 14.2 could be smaller, if not too far to travel to view could be worth trying some of those. also some bloodlines breed smaller, so worth looking at the breeding, not that I could help in that department, the sire of my foal this year would have been pushed to be described as 14.2, but the resulting foal is exquisite. |

tahir don't worry about your mares hight..stallions usually work it out for themselfs
one year l agreed to cover a part bred who was 13.2hh...when she arrieved she was more like 12.2hh!...however bit too late to change my mind with mare there 'gaging' first attempted was a diaster...stallion [15.2] was a tad confused..as he had totally missed [mares wearing evidence of his fertility on her ears!] me thinking about building her a bank!...but while l was thinking about this my boy hopped on again and sort of bent his legs and shimmyied onto the lustful trollop
had a fab filly who made a good 14.2 and is the pride and joy of her breeder and spoilt rotten

I have a 14.1hh pure bred. My friend has bred a couple of smaller Arabs too. They are around 13.3hh - 14hh mark. Best things come in small packages! |

Trudi you need to look in the States. Some of the Arabians here are so inbred they are tiny! People are amazed when I take mine out showing on the height of them they are so big. Not only that they have substance.

Ash, I'm not worried about the stallion covering her - she is very happy to accomodate in that way!!!! (as in crouch or stand on tippy-toes - hussy) I worry about the resulting foal being too big for her to deliver - OUCH!!!, and all the problems this may cause!!!.
Her full sister, standing 14.1hh, delivered a lovely foal by a 14.3 stallion, but still had rather a large tear inside!!!! - I am paranoid!!! - and I hate breeding (why do I still do it???)
