Has anyone any experience/knowledge on this?
it seems quite unusual but knowone seems to knows the cause or cure.
Baically cracked heels have been playing havoc with us this year and we havent had any wet weather or even mud fever during the winter months!
ive seen some reports linking it to photo sensitivity and/or mites?
ive tried everything from antibiotics, sudocream, hibiscrub, athletes foot treatments, bandaging, rest (lost of!).
it gets better with all above but cant seem to shake it off!

I had a big problem with this on my horses with white hooves and socks. Agian, no mud in winter but wet, dewy grass in summer months. It took a few weeks to go but i used sudo cream every day and very little washing of the legs. So you just added to the wound each day rather than washing and reapplying. Funnily enough not had any this year!

Not sure if any help but if there are scabs etc I use aromaheel from the internet and it is brilliant stuff, and sun cream of factor 50 non scented baby stuff or to be honest sometimes just a non scented baby lotion can help to keep the skin moisturised and in good condition and as mentioned very little washing, tea tree is also very good. good luck it is miserable we had it on my gelding in spring last year and this regieme was all that shifted it in the end.

What about sunburn?? I know this may seam strange but my mare gets this in the summer on her white sock. I apply a barrier cream like udder cream or sunscreen and it seems to do the trick...

After trying everything under the sun to remove it last year from my
boy I tried Manuka Honey and it worked a treat.

Clean legs with mild hibiscrub and dry off then apply the honey and
bandage and within a few days the scabs came off and left the fetlocks clean and pain free!!

That reminds me, prevention better than cure, even though its not
sunny like last year he still got it

Am going to start putting sunblock on or barrier cream.

Janet

Thats why the aromaheel is so good as it is not sticky and gets rid of the scabs by sofening them whilst soothing the sore skin, a bonus is no need to bandage and you can turn out as it is waterproof, a bit less than the honey and you get a big pot

bright sunlight can burn pink/white heals..
one year had a real problem with the sand in our new sand school...sand is made of glass and acts like a prism...had to wash the legs off very carefully or we would find the horses using the school developed mud fever like infections...which got us all stumped...no mud!

hope that helps...look to where you are riding

does anyone know the ingrediants of aromaheel - does it require withdrawal period or contain banned substances for SJ/eventing or racing?

For any scabs i use Epaderm. It cost £10 from Boots for a 500g pot and that would last u ages. I originally got it from the doctor for my daughter who has eczema, and it is the only thing that would clear her bouts of this. So i thought i would try it on Sunny as she had slight mudfever. It works really well, just wipe it on and next day scabs are lose but most of the time gone. Sunny recently got a couple of sunburn scabs on her nose and this cleared it up within a couple of days. I also use it for me if i get dry hands. would recommend

Ollie had this last year. I tried absolutely everything and just managed to chase it around his foot, all the time it was getting bigger and bigger. Then as soon as I brought him in at night and his feet could dry out it disappeared with no treatment at all. So I would say fetch him in for a period and let his feet dry fight off. Good luck with it, it's the most frightful pain in the but!!

Apparently according to my vet that has seen Filly im babaysitting for a friend, which has mud fever, it can be Nettle/Thistle/Buttercup all gives same reaction as mud fever is all from the same family, and its because its humid and moist, not dry like summers should be!!

Virkon!

The best thing for any 'mystery' skin complaint and as others have suggested Sudocreme.

Also works on sweetitch (not sudocreme) my shetland has a strange scuffyness on her coat that makes her rub but it isn't sweetitch, so we regularly washe her off with Virkon and it keeps it at bay.

Clover ( especially Red )can cause photosenitivity and sunburned white legs are an issue I've had to deal with too. Zinc based sun blocks are good and also that Green Ointment can soften scabs and heal very fast too.

Has anyone tried UV boots as the UV mask I have solved the burned white stripe and star business altogether? Chlio hates boots though and I worried she might sweat under them and make things worse.

UV boots are good. I've been using a pair for a week now and it's helping no end. So far I've only used the Equilibrium sun protect chaps but I have a set of Cashel Crusader Leg Guards on order too so I'm going to try both and see which ones my boy prefers.

thought we were getting on top this week with a mixture of athlete foot cream, from chemist and pastern wraps - but more work and weekend's sun (only turned out for couple of hours) blew their legs up again - the sun definatly seems to be having an effect.
interesting about the thistle and buttercup and clover though - there are lots around us.
- aromheel should be here this week so hope this and box rest will help.
