How many are there in the UK now? I know Seahorse arabians have Amoroso De Salvadora, but he's only there this year. Where is he usually? Are there more? Ros

I think Gerald Watson of SendCourt Arabians has 2 or three young straight spanish stallions. Also although not straight spanish don't forget Emma Maxwell's lovely Borneo Son Adawy. He is very smart and doing fabulously with Louisa Biles under saddle. |

Susan George also has a really lovely almost (but not quite) Spanish stallion and he is a super riding horse. she may have more than one but the one I am thinking of has super bloodlines and is well worth looking at if you are looking to use a Spanish stallion.

I also have my boy Al Galero another Borneo son and out of Ayat who is also very successful under saddle.
I see a bit of a theme here with Borneo babies being good under saddle |

I'm also very interested in this thread. I looking for a husband for my new mare for next year. I love the Spanish and Spanish related arabs - both for their looks and their temperament as I want to breed a performance arab that is also stunning to look at. There does seem to be very few Spanish stallions at stud in this country - why aren't they more popular?
Emma - I was looking at your lovely website the other day - stunning photos! Adway really took my breath away and that was before I looked at his pedigree and saw he was Spanish related. |

Unfortunately we are a bit short of S.S in this country now, although as has been said there are lots of Spanish related stallion's who have a lot to offer, The breeder of *Sasaki, whom I visited in the states earlier this year has two of the oldest and most treasured S.S stallions left there and she is a gold mine of information about SS. you may remember I wrote an article about Sasaki ( who happens to have put the spanish into Magnum psyche) well another of my article's is about to come out in the AHS news this summer, its about the S.S stallion "Zaon",( Jacio x Onza )bred by Annette Hedley and sold to the states 29 years ago, do look out for it. I was left wondering where our breeding might have been, had he not stayed in this country. Our loss I think so remember not all good horses come from abroad, some are here right under your noses, use them or lose them.here are some pix of both SS stallions

I have a golden cross stallion; the love of my life. He is by Crusader out of my straight Spanish mare who I bought from the Maxwell's as a yearling. He is 15 3", pure white with the huge black Spanish eyes and yards of flowing mane and tail. On a foul winter morning when I get up at 4.30am his beautiful head over the stable door makes it all not quite so bad!

We have 5 straight spanish stallions, and 20 spanish mares. Procyon lines mainly. All bred and still owned by the Jenkins family,

Bumping this thread as IMHO it has come to a premature end, as it were - I was hoping it would turn into an ‘appreciation’/educational thread like the one on Russian arabs. Thought I might learn something useful as my mare was one quarter spanish (a granddaughter of Tabuk by Garbo) and there doesn’t seem to be that much info/that many spanish arabians around, not in the UK anyway? Is this how it’s always been or have they become unpopular/unfashionable, and why? What are their characteristics(both good and bad!)?
Be most grateful for any enlightenment…thanks in advance.

Very sensible, a person who chooses for colour has a lot to learn, because when quality is important the colour is neither here nor there The horses owned by Annette Hedley are very typical of the spanish horses and I am glad to see people are still keeping the SS going. |

As far as i know beau rashella has always thrown bay to a bay stallion. I'm not sure of the genetics of this, but i'm sure the only sure thing is chestnut to chestnut. I agree with regards colour, however as you say, there are lots to choose from. If you are only going for a one off breeding, why not take your time and find the right conformation, temperament and colour! Good luck Ros |

Hi Ros and thanks!
Yes, you're right. Shelley has had five foals - four to Welsh Cob stallions - all bay and one to a coloured stallion, the offspring being bay and white. Originally I was going to put her back in foal this year but as it was all out of the blue that I had the chance to buy her I decided to wait until next year and give myself loads to time to find the right stallion. This'll be the first foal I've ever bred so want to get everything within my control right. I will probably breed from her again at some point after this, but only if my circumstances are such that I know what future any subsequent foals will have. |
