Heart ruling head is the best way to buy any animal Laminitis is such a variable thing it is difficult to predict the outcome, but there are plenty of horses living normal lives who have had it as long as they are managed correctly. You need a vet who knows what (s)he is doing and an excellent farrier---preferably a fully qualified remedial farrier. I would also suggest you have a look on the laminitis Trust/ Clinic website and phone their helpline. A very basic simplistic outline of different stages of laminitis:
---Simple laminitis, which is inflammation of the laminae, and can be cause by various things including too much grass or concussion. This is "fairly" easy to get a full recovery from with the right treatment.
---If it goes on too long or if it is suddenly severe to start with the pedal bone rotates----the laminae at the front of the foot become detached. This needs more expert treatment---heart bar shoes etc. ---but again horse can become sound . A rotated pedal bone can pierce the sole, depending on the conformation of the foot, so the bone coming through the sole is not necessarily "founder".
---When the laminae detach all the way round the pedal bone drops totally and it is said to be "sunk" or "foundered". This is the worst case scenario.
X-rays done by someone who knows what they are doing are essential in all but the most simple cases of laminitis to be able to get the treatment right.
Good luck |

Hi all, I got him last night after meeting the people at the services and unloading 4 other horses before getting "chance" rebel off. He was really lame on back legs now after the state of them. I have took some pics but they dont really show the swelling etc. He settled in very well in his temp stable with his new mate outside. He drank so much water when we got him back. Its his back leg thats the worse we think he must have gone down in the lorry cos of all his burns on his face and pelvis etc.
He isnt standing as bad on his front legs but ill know more when got them xrayed today prob cos of the pain in his back end. Cos dont know how much bute he has been given by the dealers. His back will need doing eventally when he bit better as looks like put back out too. I really didnt want to hand them the £1500 but he will be worth it.

I did try and get them to reduce price but they played on my heart strings at the fact i knew what would happen to him if they took him back to there yard or sold him at an un-warrentied sale as he was. |

Poor boy He is lovely - I hope the news the vet brings is hopeful. Why do people who are clearly so heartless get involved with animals in the first place If it is money that motivates them then there are far easier ways to make a bob or two. Makes me mad - they are clearly stupid as well as cruel. Well done you for making a difference |

Am reading this bleary eyed (again). I can only commend you wholeheartedly for your heart ruling your head on this occasion. Poor bloody horse, the people who had him should be shot at dawn. Unbelievable.
At least he now has a "Chance" of a normal and fulfilling life with you. Really hope the Vet brings you good news. |

Hats off to you Precious. A name well used - it truly takes someone very special to do what you have done. I have a big lump in my throat writing this and Im fighting back the tears at just the thought of what that poor little chap has endured. (I havent read it all because I cant). I know one thing tho, he will reward you 10 fold for this, god bless him!
As i said, I havent read it all so forgive me if I am talking out of turn but is there a way that perhaps you could make a claim against anyone involved and get back you money so that you can spend it on looking after the little chap?
Well done you! Sandie |

Hi Sandie, I would love to try and get my money back and put it onto the vet bills but we arent dealing with normal horse people :( they are hardcore dealer. I have been in contact with horse charities to try and help the others cos they have around 30 new horses in a week mainly imported from spain/belguim etc which arent in the best shape. But again the rspca and ILPH cant do alot ive provided them with loads of information. At least its one off them. I would love to have more but keeping 2 at livery was hard enough £ wise and now Ive got a 3rd. Ill try and get him right then find him a loving home cos thats my job done then. And boy can "chance" jump |

He must have been loved in a prior home as his nature is lovely and his been clipped including bridle path and his feet are in good nick also. But not heard yet of last real owners in Killarney Ireland. Im off now to see how he gets on at vets with his cuts and xrays.

so good of you to give him a home, hes a handsome chap and with some tlc he will be very nice. Just a thought have you checked to see if he has been stolen at all, when the vets out get him to check to see if he has been microchipped also, as all the ihb registered horses now require micro chip. and if he is microchipped good chance its an ihb one so they would be able to trace his last owners, breeders ect and give you an address and possble phone number. i found out my fillys breeder a few years this way just by the horses name. good luck with him. |
