Hi Angel, my 14.3 Arab mare takes a 5'9" rug, but it has to be Shires, otherwise she gets terrible rubs. She is VERY broad though, I guess she was about six when she finished maturing width-wise.
My daughters' 15.1 Arab (aged 4) takes the same size (5'9") but is narrower, so she can wear most brands without rubbing) it depends a lot on how chunky they are. |

Hello Angel, like Louise I have a 14.3hh who is in 5'9" - he's in a Rambo - no rubbing and he's Crabbet so like Louise's quite a substantial chap
Lance is 15.3hh and is in a 6' rug but at the moment it's away being fixed so he's in Otan's 6'3" rug which is fine. Both rugs are Fals and are very durable, great fit, especially warm, no rubbing and last years and years. Lance is 11 and he's had his 6' one at least six years with only the front fix straps that need replacing every now and again.
The youngster is close on 16hh at 3 (!!) but hasn't worn a rug yet. He's very short backed so I reckon a 6' but a 6'3" when he's being ridden and has filled out. |

All of my turnout rugs are Horseware ones.
Dennis is 16hh and takes a 5.9 Rambo Wug and Rug, a 5.9 Rhino Wug but a 6ft Rhino Rug and a 6ft Amigo.

Pasha is 15.2 and takes a 6ft in Rambo, Bucas and WB - Amigo's come up small so he has to have a 6'3 in those....
IMO the Heavyweight Horsewear Rugs are unbeatable BUT for the lighter Summer versions (outdoor) I prefer Bucas - they also do brilliant stable rugs which wrap all round their bum and keep them snug and warm |

oops sorry.... forgot to answer your original question....
When we brought Pasha at 6, he wore 5'9 rugs.... BUT he was very very fit having come out of racing and not long being gelded! By 7 or 8 he was a 6ft (with a big bum ) |

I think my Crabbet mare didn't fully mature until she was 9 years old!! I think rug size depends on the make of the rug & shape of horse? The majority of my rugs are 5' 9", but IMO Amigos & Saxon need a larger size. Lisa |

Old mare Kizzy is in Premier Equine rug, fits a treat. Most of the others are in Mark Todd or Horseware. When I had Mia on loan, all her rugs were JHL. All fit well. As to when they stop growing, really depends on the horse. |

My three year old is in a 5'9s Takka heavyweight combo which fits well and doesn't seem to rub, although there is one area about 1/4 way up her neck from the withers which seems to have lost some mane - damn.
Then her lightweight is a 5'6 Mark Todd. She is still very narrow and this doesn't really fit her well at all - it cuts below the shoulder, so if you use it without the hood most of her shoulder gets wet and it drips down. I know I should dart it, but it is looking like it is getting snug so I am guessing that she will have a bit of a growth spurt come Spring and will need a new one anyway.
If anyone has any good recommendations for narrow horses, do let me know.

Think i am going to leave it a couple of years before i spend £100's on new wardrobe, this info has been really helpful,
Just waiting for his new lycra sports bra to arrive, (well thats what they look like) his shoulders are getting rubbed out this year |

Becky - 1 of my Arabs is rising 2 so still abit narrow, so the Amigo's & Saxon fit him wonderfully, but no where near broad or deep enough for my mature Crabbet mare - hope that helps. Lisa |

Fal, Fal, Fal....
Never ever rub and last for years, They are a bit more expensive but definately worth it. So easy to put on and take off and so light to handle and quick to dry.
Friends have used other brands, but nothing (to me, or my horses, are as good as Fal!)
Look out on ebay for bargains. (Goodness, you'd think I was on commision from ebay, lol...)
Size wise, the 5' 9" fits my 15hh mare perfectly.

I`m with you Sandra, Fal rugs are the best, and they really do fit Arabs. They seem to go on for ever, and never need re-proofing. I`ve had some of mine for over 10 years now, they are looking a bit tired, but still waterproof. And they do not rub or are off balance like some of the other rugs on the market. The weatherbeeta ones never seem to sit right, always to one side or other and do cause rubs. My 14.2hh Arabs are in 5`6" and 14.3 - 15hh are in 5`9" in the Fals.

Has to be Fals or Rambos. The Rhinos don't seem to fit mine nearly as well as the Rambos. My 3 year old colt (three in July) is in a 5 6" Rambo wug and my other colt who will be 4 in May and is a big boy is in a 5 9" Rambo wug. He is a short coupled 15 2" and well built. It very much depends on the horse. Most of mine are in 5 9". I don't find the Masta rugs fit well and look uncomfortable so I gave them away.
Vera, Horseware should give you a big discount for all the 200 rugs Dennis has; I have loads of Rambos but then I do have several horses!!!!

mine are all in rambo's too although they can be pricey they do last and they look so comfy on mine all fit into a 5 9 but one mare who is almost 16 hands l usually buy a 6 foot for [but as she has torn a strap off she is wearing one the spares 5 9] l also have some rhinos and some light weight amigos but l find they are not cut as generous as the rambo and you might need a size bigger mainly my rugs last for years and l have bought cheaper rugs but end up throwing them out as they do not last very long

8 years! Zara started in a 5ft 6" when we bought her at 2 yrs old and quickly progressed to a 5ft 9", which was a little big but the 5ft 6" was too small/ tight. Then she grew into the 5ft 9" and it fitted well until last winter when it really was far too small, and we had to replace all her rugs with 6fts except for a 10 year old rambo medium wt which says its 5ft9" but which was ptreviously always too large on her. |

you can get rug extensions which go onto the front of the rug and make it larger so this could cut down the price of buying a new rug for a youngster for a few months l personally have not tried them but they look good l generally find that once they hit three they do not alter much in the length...[my youngsters seem to get cast off's]

PS and l am also a compulsive buyer of rugs....have about 35 and only got three horses at home! |
