I'm devastated, heart broken, angry, worried.. anything else I can add to the emotions!
Today, on returning from walking out a lady who has horses in the area was waiting for me by my gate...
she told me on monday she caught two teenage arseholes chasing my horses, and really chaing them to the point where both had sweated up and really stressed... She had a row with them, they said they knew me (liars!) and she got rid of them for me....
I've always had a problem with people coming into my field to collect stray golf balls from the course next door...
I checked them first thing, went out for the day with the family and then checked again in the evening... when I checked them they wouldn't come to me and I knew something was wrong....
I had to have razs back manipulated under sedation last week, he was still on bute... he was suppose to be rested until today....
They were both very clingy with me when i was there all day tuesday....
I'm a nervous wreck everytime i go up there think my horses won't be there, or something bad will await....
I need to stop people getting in... I have post and barbed fencing which is covered with brambles and nettle, I have a normal farm type gate with barbed wire on top....
I need some ideas to keep them out... I have no power there to fix cctv, otherwise i would.... its going to be very difficult for me to make the fence and gate taller becuase i know the landowner will object...
I feel like my heart has been ripped out because I wasn't there for them....
The scrotums have been seen jumping on peoples horses and winding them up to see how long they can stay on for, bucking bronto style... I feel sick to the stomach - one saving grace is that i don't think they would have been able to get on raz, but if they had shown the pony some food he may have let them... pony now runs off bucking when we go to get him......
My poor boys

Hi Kirsty
Really feel for you - we had this a while ago and the kids were dealt with (large burly blokes & like for like punishment )
Is the gate metal? Can you rig up an electric unit hidden in the hedge and clip the live wire to the gate? We did this for a while to stop people feeding the horses titbits after my mare got her foreleg stuck in it and shredded the skin on the front of her cannon bone . We had repeatedly asked the people not to do it but they just ignored us - their face was a picture when they leant on the gate

Hi Kirsty, so sorry you are having theses problems can't think of much apart from the electric idea, only I'd use galvanised wire so they didn't suspect! have you got anyone who could literally stake out the field hidden from view and catch the buggers on camera? I hope it soon stops. |

Oh my, im so sorry to hear this..... Im sorry im not going to be much use either except for the electric fencing idea, run it along the fence and gate.. Might help a bit. Or put a sign up beware guard dogs on patrol.. We use one, I think it works, there are no dogs patrolling but the intruders dont know that!!! Just a though.. Hope things get better for you. |

Sorry you're having to put up with this Kirsty, it's so damned infuriating and what's worse is that the horses can't speak for themselves. I'd echo what everyone has said but I'd also make a report to the Police. I know it may not be on their hot list, but with horse attacks on the increase, forewarned is forearmed. You never know, they might just send the odd patrol car past now and again. Other than that, I'd be tempted to stake it out, watch and wait. Sounds a bit dramatic but I think when it comes to protecting our beloved horses, nothing is too much. Morons. |

I was going to say about putting signs up also! Even if you don't have CCTV you can always put up a sign? Really hope things are ok,I'm sure the horses, however scared will know you do your best for them, and it shows they are comforted having you around. Maybe you could train them to kick? hehe. |

Kirsty, just another thought, if you can't put in CCTV how about getting a "dummy" camera, might just put them off a bit. |

Having been in this situation in the past I would agree with all the above, especially telling the police. Make all neighbours aware, if there are any, and make sure they have your number. I would also inform the golf course as they must have some security. Is your field on a road or footpath or bridle path? Dont feel bad, you are doing your best. Is there a Horsewatch in your area, you could also contact them. |

Thank you for your ideas! I am definately going to hook up my elec to the gate, just going to buy a better battery for a bigger shock! Spoke to my landlady, can't do anything else except more barbed fencing around whats already there... she suggested informing the police too... I'm also going to go for the dummy camera and fix it up some how pointing to the gate... and going to get to work on some signs.... I've asked eveyone i know to text me if they see anyone in there... OH will drive past as often as he can.... My field is directly onto a country road... I residents in the area have neighbourhood watch, don't know about horsewatch... just about to google it and see if any info comes up for my area.... thank you all! |

Kirsty so sorry to hear of your trouble - well short of sitting in the hedge with a gun and shooting the litle ****s! Which unfortunately isnt legal -shame - put up firstly a sign saying the following: -
I KNOW WHO YOU ARE, I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE, TOUCH MY HORSES AND I WILL COME LOOKING FOR YOU! Sorry about the caps but shouting - had to resort to similar as I had some travellers recently who thought they had easy picking on my place and wanted one of my horses - an almost 3 yr old TB x Polo pony - big beautiful and gangly he is 15.2 now and still growing - despite me telling them he was not for sale they persisted - even telling them the truth didnt make the slightest bit of difference - he has got a knackered hock - kicked as a foal by his mum written off and will never be worked or ridden as his leg just wont take it - anyway plastered the village with info on the people and the car number - fake cctv on the stables and a notice similar to the above on the gate - oh yeah and a quiet word with the local police - problem solved. With regard to the cctv (dummy ones get the ones that flash and move - mount them on a pole and run any old bit of electric flex from them down to the ground and away from where its likely to be sussed prevention is better than a cure.... Be careful with the electric because the laws in this country are on the side of the ciminal - if one of these little ****s get hurt they can and probably will go to the police about you! Lifes unfair!

Kirsty - havent seen the geese thread but know quite a bit about them having kept them for years - yes they are a deterrent - most people are petrified of them and you can take a hammering from a gander - however - you cant really leave them out 24 hours a day as you have the risk of foxes who will take them one by one- and its not pleasant - also at night they are more noisy and less aggressive during the day they are marvellous if you get them either get all ganders - believe me nobody will take them on especially if they are chineese geese or else get enough geese at least 5 - so that you can have 3 geese and two ganders - but they do need a lot of grass - water food and housing.

I was discussing the elec fencing with my OH, and said about the potential for them to sue me for injury... so don't think i would want to risk the little buggers getting one over on me... completely mad and insane that you can't protect whats yours without fear of legal action! I think it is going to have to be the camera and sign routine... I may even park around the corner tomorrow and stake the place out! think the horses might give me away though but worth a shot to catch them!
I'm becoming so paranoid now... when I went back this afternoon there were horse skid marks on the ground and sox was quite warm to touch... before I used to think they've been playing, thinking twice now... I was only gone for two hours!
I now fully understand why the farmers used to fire shots in the air when I was a small child playing in an empty corner of a field when staying at my grandparents house in scotland... I used to run so fast and never go back... it obviously worked for them! |

how big is the field? how far from people? can you not borrow a caravan and park it in the field, stay in it for a while from time to time or get someone to stay in it, so they think there is someone there 24/7? just another thought. |

If you do electrify the field, put warning signs around, that should stop anyone taking legal action if they get a shock (I think)???

If you can't electrify the actual gate, you can still put up a few strands of electric tape on poles on the inside of the gate. Obviously you need to be able to get out, but you know where you can switch it off! It would be worth investing in and you'll always be able to use it or sell it on if you don't need it.
I had a similar problem with my mare. She was staying at a friend's yard on the other edge of the village for a few weeks and I went there one day and found stones on the yard floor. The local boys had been trying to hit her with stones while she was in the stable - a sitting target. I was furious. I also found stones in the field and was sure they'd been doing this when she was out to make her move.
Unfortunately because it wasn't my place I had no alternative but to move her. I can imagine how you feel but I'd definately go for the electric fencing, and perhaps keep them to the back of the field with another strand so they can't get near them.
Have you anywhere else they can go temporarily til these idiots divert their sad minds to some other activity? |

my field is 3.5 acres, it right on the road and surrounded by golf course, and two large gardens. Its a five minute drive from my house. I was given a caravan sometime ago so i could have a warm drink in the winter and somewhere to warm to sit... The land owners gave me two days to get rid of it! Just didn't want on the field...
Unfortunately there is no other plaace for me to move the horses to either....

COULD YOU APPROACH THE LAND OWNER AND TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR PLIGHT AND ASK IF IT WOULD BE OK TEMPORERILY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM ?OPPS sorry I didnt mean to shout just had the cap lock on have you asked the police to look out for you? you could say that one of the horses is dangerous and if someone got hurt, they ( the police will have failed in their duty to warn kids off, after YOU have warned the police ! |

I think you should hook up a 10,000 volts shock onto the gate, but make it really discrete.. Put a really small sign up with a 'warning' and watch them frazzle!! That el' teach em'!! |
