hi , this subject is really bothering meso i thought i would share and see what you all think!
a few days ago at our yard a cob escaped from his stable and went on a feed ramage! munched his way through haylage, 4 x feeds a whole bag of carrots and 1/2 a bag of mix suprisingly with no side effects! i 'found' the guilty party looking very stuffed in the morning ...and shoved back him in his stable! then cleared up a big mess! the owner turns up after i tried ( and failed) to locate a emergency number for her she did apologise but seemed to think it was hilariously funny, not much else was said and they made no offer to replace what they had 'eaten' i approached her the next day and very politely asked when we could expect our lost feed/carrots replaced? i was met with abuse and agression basically she went crazy and said 'we should have to replace anything it was a accident' 'apparently we are trouble causers???'
we have been left a succession of delightfully written notes which say we must not touch 'our stuff' dont tie your horses up near our stables' blah , blah drivell , drivell
am i mad??? i mean has common courtesy gone out the window??? i am actually quite upset , and of course 'we have a lovely atmostphere to boot' great! this women is well known for a being abusive and a bully - she obviusly wants to make life unpleasant for me what can i do !!!

You definatly are not being unreasonable. This horse could have also caused an accident as well as eating all the feed. Would they expect you not to claim if your horse had been hurt by his escape. Out of politness they should have offered to replace eaten or ruined horse feed. Could this horse get out and do it again or was it just a one off
It also is the horse owners responsiblity to keep emergency numbers on the yard for you. What would have happened if the horse had broken a leg would you have had to wait for her to arrive to call a vet?
It sounds like this individual is being very petty and your right in saying a bully. Can you not make the yard owner aware of her attitude? I am lucky as our feed is kept in a tack room in bins where horses cannot access.
I'm so that one individual can make you feel so many different emotions. If you haven't already I would talk to yard owner.
Ps sorry to ramble |

Can you have a word with the YO?

I have had similar treatment at a previous yard. I left in the end as the other person who was extremely agressive. Would go out of his way to be as unpleasant to me and my horse as possible. It is all about pleasure and enjoyment so I took the easier option. |

I think you should point out that we are all responsible for our horses...if your horse had got out and trampled her saddle would she find that amusing? or shredded £200 worth of Fal rug...? I think she is showing her ignorance by not offering to replace your feed, personally I would have made sure your feed was replaced, and added a box of chocs as an apology. The think is ...are you ever going to get any better atmosphere on thet yard if that is the hight of their social decorum ? you may have to move ....or this may just be the start....... |

her horse -- her responsibilty!!!!
If my horse had done something like that, I would even need to be asked to replace the stuff!!
I'd get your YO to do the dirty work and get your feed replaced! |

Oh I'm sorry Sarah - what a horribly rude woman.
Sorry I can't offer any advice; I hate confrontations of any sort and am bit of a coward but if this woman is not forward coming, then I think it is definitely worth speaking to the YO.

I dont think you are being unreasonable at all, I think you should stick to your guns. Horses are expensive enough to keep without this extra cost!! People need to take responsibility for their horses!! |

Shame said person doesn't have a feed account at a local merchant as you could have been really sneeky and put it on that |

What a bloody cheek - I would have gone absolutely mad!! No one at my yard would ever do this - we even say sorry when the cheeky little monkeys grab a mouthful of someone else's haynet on the way past, but of course no one minds that!
I do feel for you being at a yard with a complete cowardly bully - if I were you I would put feeds in old supplement containers with lids that neds can't get off and lock everything else away! The trouble with these types of people are that they haven't really got a clue and are not intelligent enough to work out how to be polite and get on with everyone else. They obviously lead sad little lives and making your life miserable is their entertainment. I feel sorry for them!!
Chin up - it's more than likely just jelousy of your gorgeous horses! x |

People these days never cease to amaze me, manners and common courtesy seem to have blown out the window.
Personally if that is her attitude, I would point out that had it been your horse, you would have replaced it immediately and see it as the decent thing to do. She is made of different stuff and therefore doesnt feel its necessary. Obviously her guilt is bothering her so much that she has to cause such an upset and atmosphere for everyone and you hope she soon feels better.
Dont worry Sarah these kind of people never last, eventually everyone will see through them and they will move on.
Dont let it upset you - they arent worth it.

hiya sarah, stck to your guns hunni, raise an invoice for the total cost of damaged goods, preferably itemised. then deduct amount already paid, then show an outstanding amount. send a copy to the yard owner out of courtesy and then dig your heels in. of course if you really want to be bloody minded you can ad an admin charge if not paid within 7 days. At least this way they will know that you mean busiess. good luck-sue |

I agree with Jaj, they should be gratefull you found the horse and put it away, last year a friend of mines cob escaped and done the same thing, he munched his way through a bag of pasture mix and actually died, trouble is some people don't realise how lucky they are to be on a yard where other people care and just take it for granted that if something needs doing it gets done, hope it turns out O.K. for you |

Hate to say it but in a well run yard this situation shouldn't arise. I don't mean that it's impossible for a horse to escape his stable and create havoc. I mean that it's the job of the yard owner to diffuse any situation and sort things out with authority, if need be ensuring that the owner of the miscreant does the right thing and making sure that the injured party is happy and satisfied with the results. There should be no need for the customers to be at each others throats as it's the owner/ managers job to prevent this kind of thing and run a smooth ship. That's the way I try to run things in my yard. Sounds a bit sanctimonious but you can't have your yard turned into a war zone and this calls for authority and diplomacy . Hope things improve in your yard. Kit |

I hate to say it, but I will: Why are animals so like their owners??? Obviously this owner is a troublemaker, and her horse has picked up on this and decided to follow her lead!!!
Seriously though, the owner really should be grateful that her horse didn't suffer any ill-effects from his escapade, and the YO should make the owner very aware of this IMHO!!

Echo everyone else, she should have offered straight away to replace what had been eaten, she would expect it if someone elses horse had eaten her feed supplies.
Dig your heels in on this one, she gets away with it this time what will she try to get away with the next time?

I dont think its your responsibility to get into a dispute with another livery. The YO should sort it out or he will quickly find that he doesnt have any liveries in the future. Discraceful behaviour by Mrs Cob but she has been allowed to be a bully. YO needs to show some leadership and control. |

They should replace out of common decency. The other week i had a note left for me by a fellow livery apologising that her dalmation stole my carrots! and that here were all of hers as replacements and sorry they werent as fresh as mine! I left her a thank you on the notice board, its common courtesy and you should be treated the same, mishaps do happen but they are still the responsibility of the owner. Hope it sorts its self out as know you really like it there x |
