The best I've found, although by no means the cheapest, is Leovet Power Phaser. It stinks, but keeps everything at bay.............even the dreaded Scottish Midge!! |

Just trying a new one called T Trec. It is American, and you only use it every 7 to 14 days dont really know yet whether it is working or not |

I use Coopers fly repellant. Very expensive about £20 a bottle but its the only thing that works on mine.
An absolute must for horse flies because they wont come near him with Coopers on, have tried nearly every other fly repellant on the market and it either doesnt work or it irratates him.
But at the moment he is being attacked by midges evil horrid things, he came in this morning looking like he has mumps or soemthing because I didnt put anything on him last night.

Used to use Derby that you diluted. That was quite effective but not sure whether you can get it any more. |

SSS works without reaction so far for us, Coopers, had a very essential oil based one last year that was good but can't recall the name, Deet etc... but the very best one is a louse wash which we can no longer get we make up bottles and sponge it on |

Dennis is also VERY allergic to the Avon Skin So Soft.
I am so wary of fly repellents. Dennis is also allergic to the one that comes in a yellow bottle with blue writing. My mare is very allergic to the Barrier Hygiene one.
Slathering their bits in Sudocreme stops the midges biting their delicate areas.
I won't use anything with citronella in it so I am limited in my options and have yet to find one that I am happy with. |

Hi,
I also use Coopers and find it the best. I also use a green gel on tails and manes as it clings a bit to prevent rubbing. I have not used Coopers on my yearling yet in case it is too potent for his skin.

I'm having trouble with midges at the moment attacking poor Crunchie Shes rubbed herself a little raw today even after a refreshing wash and being smothered in flamazine, them little blighters are picking on her so much. I went to our vet who said its awkward applying anything to her because of the open skin. I'm seriously considering taking a mobile air con unit down to stables, just don't want to cause more problems for her though by creating a draught on her. I know its great to have summer here but this year i wish it had started a bit later. |

i use strong tea (no milk!) mixed with skin so soft, benzyl benzoate, citronella, t tree oil, neem oil, white vinegar, meth spirits, calomine lotion - smells awful and seems to do the trick! Please make sure you test any new products/home brews 1st as although this mixture has been used for yrs by me, my little filly reacted to something in it and has lost some of her coat it ,luckily hasnt irritated the skin but really doesnt look great - especially as i'm trying to loan her out at the mo as a brood mare! judging from the other comments, i'm left wondering whether to point the finger at avon? double dosing garlic, adding vinegar to water supplies and feeding 6oc or 30oc of sulphur are also helpful |

Mine are in a field bordered by a stream -loads of midges and flies. I was being eaten alive, the horses, however were clear. They have all been seen taking turns in rolling in the wild garlic - smelly but fly free. I have been using their NAF-off today - it's quite cooling too. |

NAF with DEET is excellent!! If you don't want DEET then they do the same without which is also very good! |

I make my own and it works really well.... I did an experiment the other week... covered raz in it and left poor sox without.... sox was being attacked by midges instantly and raz was clear of them!!
I used it last year too... it smells vile but it keeps them beastie free! and its cost virtually nothing!! |

I'm also using the NAF with Deet in a tub at the mo, cost £9.98 and seems to work quite well, Mine get done twice a day, all down the midline belly and a bit on the ears to stob the black flys getting in... |

An old Yorkshire tradition is equal parts cold tea to vinegar. Seems to work as good as any other fly spray I have used? I use a spray bottle to put it on. Lisa |

On the recommendation of someone else, we have started adding a garlic supplement to feeds and its working a treat. We bought a big bag from our feed supplier, and on his recommendation we add it to the beet pulp when we first mix the beet up - this helps the garlic bloom better. The horses love it and the good old midge has stopped biting them! I'm wondering how much I can eat and still be socially acceptable! If your not feeding then this probably isn't very helpful. |
