I have just been mooching round on allbreeds looking up Shaikh al Kuran, leading sire at Malvern for about 4 consecutive years. I had always understood him to be 'straight' Egyptian, but a report flashed up that he is 29.29xxxxxx % Crabbet.
just curious, as he is the grandsire of one of mine, as to which lines are Crabbet and are these also 'straight' Egyptian.

Hi there,
Having a Crabbet percentage does not make a horse not Straight Egyptian. Some of the foundation stock of current Egyptian breeding went back to Egypt from Crabbet or from Lady Anne Blunt's Egyptian base of breeding at Sheykh Obeyd. Most modern Egyptian Arabians have a Crabbet percentage of some 20-30%, technically speaking. Of course all the lines were bred, and descendants selected, according to the criteria of the Egyptian programmes.
Equally modern Crabbet horses trace in approximately 50% of their blood to the Blunt's purchases from Ali Pasha Sherif in Egypt - so they are technically some 50% Egyptian!
There are very few Arabian bloodline groups that do not have at least some, if not significant amounts, of Crabbet blood - and of course that means they will have some Egyptian component too. Alexia |
