I am currently looking for a new job and a job i have applied for asked the question "yes" or "no" to be my current employer being approached prior to interview for a reference. I answered no, as there is no way i want my employers getting a sniff i want out, but am wondering if the company i have applied to will think i have something dodgy to hide by not saying yes and it will be detrimental to me getting an interview. really want this job and am now upset that i may not get interview, also you had to state your current salary although the salary for this job isn't quoted. can something like this go against you ? sorry to sound so pathetic, but have never come across this before

many years ago i worked in personnel and we completely understood that an applicant didn't want their current employer approached until they had given notice. in my day it wouldn't have gone against you at all. |

When I applied for the job I'm in now I didn't want my main boss to know...he was arsy when I asked for a referance previously, so I stated in the application only to be contacted if a job offer was probable (or something like that!) |

not too sure about the salary thing, i have blagged it in the past and ended up getting more than i would have done-but then 2nd thoughts is when you get given your P45 it says on it how much you have earned to date |

I feel a bit better now having read your comments , but i was really honest and put my salary down, well i put the basic down as my wage varies month to month anyway depending on how much commission ive made, where ive flown, da di da di da, think i must have the hardest pay slip in existence to understand think they do it so no-one can work out if there has been a mistake made or not. now i have the agony of waiting till after the closing date to see if i get an interview |

Hi Tzarina I work as an HR Manager. It is common practice to ask when to contact referees. It shouldnt go against you at all. Decent companies perfectly understand that people dont want to seem to be disloyal to their current employer until they are sure they have an offer. Likewise, with a reputable company the salary should be irrelevant - they should pay you what the job is worth.
If you dont get the job then they probably werent working for anyway. GOOD LUCK! |
