Thank you Vera for posting this.
I keep chickens at home and I am only too well aware that their's is a charmed life compared to millions of sad, unhealthy birds up and down the country....and all over the so~called "civilised" world.
I cannot add my voice strongly enough to this campaign.
Yes, I've heard it all before about reasonably priced food .... but the people who whine about what will happen to the price of poultry going up and how to feed their families will be the very ones who waste money on sweets and fatty convenience food in excessive wrappings when a damned good meal of wholessome, well produced chicken would fill more of a gap in a stomach that blasted turkey twizzlers and all that other additive filled rubbish!!!!
If we all demanded better standards, then more people would HAVE to farm in a more ethical manner and then the price of better cared for birds would actually DROP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the farmers....well, yes, the change to better methods might cost money .....isn't that where the Government should step in on behalf of the health of the nation, better off eating sensible food than chicken ( well, maybe 2% chicken and 98% God knows what ) Nuggets and laying up fewer heart problems due to fat rich food in later life for the people of Britian.....which is going to cost the health service more in the long run.....
My Grandmother used to say, better pay the grocer/butcher/baker than the doctor!!!!!!!!!!
She had a point!! |

V I've tried to sign it but it wont accept my e.mail address. Been watching the programme and am horrified at how these poor chickens are raised - esp when I see what luxury my 9 girls live in |

I can vouch for the luxury your girls live in and I've tasted their produce - yummy !
I didn't really think that there would be much differnce but free range chicken really does taste better. I've had it several times now - tonight in fact, and not only does it taste better but its got a much nicer texture, oh and when you cook it loads of white goo doesn't come out of it either. |

Signed up! (and sent it to loads of friends) Interesting though, in the time since the programme I've been 2 two Tesco stores on numerous occassions...& friends have too...NOT a free range/freedom farm chicken in sight OH actually went to see the store manager on Saturday, & was told they DID sell 'some' free range but they sold out very quickly. Isn't that down to a small thing called Econonics "Supply & Demand" no sign of them running low on the 2 for £5 ones though. |

Signed, sealed and sorted !! I have noticed that in the last two weeks at our Tesco's in Newbury, when I did my weekly food shop, there were no free range chickens of any description left on the shelves, all of them had been sold. Noticed also that the two for £5 chickens are now 2 for £5.50 ! Loads of those still to be had unfortunately. It won't happen overnight, but it's heading in the right direction. Only hope that people don't forget about it and slip back into their old habits. |

Question..when Tesco store manager was asked if they were going to increase supply of free range he replied that they have to 'find' sources etc which is why the shelves are empty. Personally I think its a bit of a con & supermarkets maybe digging their heels in? |

I am really pleased with the response to support the cause.
