One of my chickens is having a rest from laying eggs and has almost lost all her feathers, she's eating well and quite bright so I think she'll be OK in a few weeks and even better than before when she gets her new coat...ps. had to spray her bum as the other birds were a bit interested in it....

I have two of the kind, poor girls in this weather.I can see they are real uncomfortable but it will grow out again.
They have been laying there on their eggs for ages, no babys, now they have give up.

I have a look alike Sue.
Same as your girlie, she is well in herself, eating, normal behaviour etc, and has all the new sprouts ready to break out. I expect its drafty at the moment for her.
They do look a sight though, I have to agree. |

Oooh she's a warren, a laying hen! My parents used to have 2000 free range chickens. They rescued them from a battery farm at a yr old and they all looked like your girl, the feathers will return! On their arrival my father had ensured that they had acres of land to play in and a massive barn with doors made in the sides. With great excitement after their 24 rest in the barn, he opened up the doors and we all stood in the fields waiting for them to rush out....guess what...nothing... they were petrified. They couldn't bear the light and space, it was so sad. He carefully put a few outside and as soon as their feet hit the grass they turned tail and sprinted back into the barn. After a few months about 2 or 3 hundred would venture out tentatively, but at the first hint of a strange noise they were off!
Anyway back to the point, they have a scent gland at the base of their tails and for some reason some of the others sometimes like to peck at it, the more sore it gets the more they peck....and if rats can manage a look in they will. I'm sure yours is more easy to manage than 2000 though! Hope she's back to her feathery self soon! Anna |

Well it was purple sheep foot spray, used to be called Chloramycetin ????& Gentian violet, you couldalways try a good dose of flea powder, that just might stop them pecking.... |
