My gorgeous filly has a splint. I assume it's a splint (large hard swelling on the inside of her foreleg, below the knee). There is no pain, heat or lameness, just a swelling that feels almost like bone. I have no idea how she's done it, the fields are moist and certainly not hard. She is very relaxed filly who doesn't do racing around, though there were fireworks last night. When i did my poo picking this morning, there was no evidence that they had been racing around (furrows etc). The only other thing was the 2 hour journey she made to come here. However that was in a really good horsebox, driven by a proffessional horse transporter whom i trust. Could that have caused it? That was 10 days ago. I am waiting for the vet to call me back. I feel really upset. I have never dealt with horses with splints before, so i have no idea whether it will heal. I had hoped to do endurance with her. Will it stop me doing this? Any advice welcome Ros

Hi Ros, Yes, it does sound like a splint. Is she lame on it? Splints usually don't cause too much of a problem once they have settled down, and won't affect you doing endurance at all. It can be caused by hard ground/concussion, doing too much too soon, a knock to the leg, a kick and lots of other reasons. Sometimes they settle down so you wouldn't notice they were there, and others will stay as a lump. Hope this helps a bit!

Yes it does, thanks. I've only had her for 10 days, and i took one look at her this morning and panicked. It must have happened last night, as even if there was a swelling yesterday, it was slight as she is groomed and inspected all over daily. This morning, there is no mistaking it. I just thought "oh no, i've broken her!". There were lots of fireworks last night, so it's possible she kicked herself. We have been removing any dead wood from the field daily, specifically for this reason. I'll see what the vet says when they call. Ros |
