In the interest of fairness for all members of the AHS then I would suggest the North/South venues should alternate between Leeds and Bristol, these are both far more central to ALL members, have good motorway, rail links and airports, London is the South East rather than the south of the country. I like the idea of the regional groups holding meetings but I want to meet all my council members at an AGM and realistically I cannot imagine how all council could possibly attend so many different meetings, I'm also not sure if it would be acceptable under charity law.
As none of this is likely to happen, the midlands is my preferred choice.

Ok then, another thought, in the interest of fairness to ALL members, why cant at least one council member each attend a regional group on behalf of the council as a whole to over see fairness? you will get MORE attendance in regions as apposed to ONE venue for the whole country. I need to stress that most of us will have commitments to our own horses and will not be able to travel and stay away from home for any length of time. |

Lynda good thinking but I don't think it's voting that people want to get to the AGM for - our votes go by post don't they? I think after all the disturbance of the last year or three they want to hear council explain what's happened and get the reassurance they need about the running of the society - and to have answers to questions put to them on the day, in person, perhaps by the people in the background who don't actually put their head bravely above the parapet on Arabian Lines. Perhaps the people who have resigned will be there too, and the membership can get the real picture for a change, one which Heather and Jayne have explained is too complex to replicate on this site.
I'd say Birmingham/Midlands is a fair, central location for everyone. Most rail and motorway routes lead easily to it. London's dreadfully expensive to get to and stay in if you have to do an overnighter. Hands up here, I do live within an hour of Birmingham but I still think it gives more people a chance of attending. |

Who's chair? Can't remember! But people do need to be aware of the rules in case questions have to be provided beforehand. Some meetings don't allow questions from the floor, although there were a lot of questions from the floor (unanswered in the main) at the AGM I went to three years ago. I think members will get answers this time though. It seems there has been quite a lot of internal reorganisation and it appears to have been done with a lot of planning. So I'm sure there will be no reticence when it comes to members requests. |

An idea put to me earlier today is why not have the Regional Groups organise a coach for members to travel to the AGM (wherever it is held) That way it should be a lot cheaper for us all to attend, no hassle trying to park etc, and just think of the conversation on the way home!! Just one more idea to throw into the pot, but a pretty good one I think. |

I think some regional groups did try this but in the past they met with little enthusiasm. The north Wales group organises coaches for stud visits, and they are great! We even went to Devon for an overnighter, so this is a good idea if it gets support.
An alternative would be for those who say 'must be London because not everyone drives' would be for the AHS to hire a minibus to collect people from the nearest station, assuming they did not car share with a driver, (which is why so many people do not want London.) This could be pre-booked and paid for by anyone who needed to use it, or if just a few, I am sure there would be volunteers to taxi them.
Individual train tickets to London can cost the earth, plus all the faffing with tubes. Not many people like to come to London by car, but are quite happy with a lot of other locations in the UK.
As has been said, 2008 is probably done and dusted, but we should formally write to the AHS for future venues before the 2008 AGM so it can be put on the agenda. |

Hello Pat - yes it is a good idea (wish I'd thought of it myself)& I agree with you about previous years being met with little enthusiasm, but I do believe THIS time the response would be differant - judging by the response on A-L to all that's gone on recently at Windsor House. If questions have to be submitted before attending the AGM they could be discussed at one of the Regional meetings by the people who will be attending. What do you think? |
