Hi Pixie
You are doing the right thing I am the world's worst judge of horseflesh and have made a few mistakes of which I have had to take the consequences One of my favourite quotes goes something like this 'never knowingly buy trouble, because trouble will find you soon enough anyway' Trouble knows where I live Again, good luck with your search.
PS Rooster came via Ascot sales, beautiful horse, lovely nature, but boy, have I had to put some work in on him |

Thanks guys. Am going to Ascot Sales. Its in the diary. I haven't advertised what I want. I may well do so in the future. I'm a bit put off at the thought of receiving phone calls frome very man and his dog (so to speak). There are enough timewasters out there without giving them my phone number to. lol |

Yesterday......... went to view a lovely 10 year old mare. Race fit and ready to go.
Good walk, nice trot allbeit not a schooled trot. This horse is a race horse afterall. Not much room to canter. Lady says would you like to go up on the track. Yes please I say. I'm really liking this little horse at this point. My friend did wonder if she was a little bit little.
Yes very fit, very sharp, and very fast which I found out to my cost. Mmmmmmm eating rubber track is not the way I like spending my evenings.
I'm a bit stiff today but am fine otherwise. Wasn't the mares fault - well maybe a teeny weeny bit was her fault. 70% rider error, 10% the saddle, 10% this horsey is supposed to do this on this track and 10% this is what horses do from time to time. hey ho.
I liked her though. Haven't been that fast in a long time. Started off slow enough - she started to get away from me a bit and I squeezed down the rein like I had in walk and trot and she got faster. So I sat down in the saddle and squeezed a bit firmer down the rein - she got faster. Stood up in the stirrups - and pulled - she got faster....... whooosh! She must have slowed down to do the 3rd buck which finally shifted me. My friend saw the 3 bucks and said the first two were fine. The last one was HUGE. Went off the side, rolled on to the electric tape (not electrified) which cushioned my fall and broke the fence post. Only a little stick not a great big fence post. My friend came running to see if I was alright. I was trying to get myself out of the long grass with my T-shirt up round my neck. Friend says to me - ooo nice black lace bra. I'm laughing. It is actually a very nice bra. - I can hear you Merlot/Lin123/Kirsty/Tahir all laughing from here.
Just so as you all know. I can do falling off. Don't want to do it but its ok. Being run on with is not ok. Its where my accident started all those years ago. She didn't bolt or tank off. She was just running on. Doing her job. Not even very strong. Just didn't do stopping. I'm sure if an experienced race rider was on her she would have stopped. I am not an experienced race rider. That is not something I've just learned. I always known that!
Marion if you are interested in the details email me I'll let you have the phone number etc. That is a serious offer by the way. She was a nice mare. Just too much for me at this level of fitness.
Am waiting a phone call today to go and see a 15.1 ID - friend says I have to go and get back on a strange horse. I am not wearing the black lace bra today. I have its friend the cream one on instead.
Over and out AL'ers - enjoy.

For goodness sake, Pixie! Glad you're OK after your tumble. Don't know about Arab racers but for the TBs picking up the reins is the aid to accelerate, which takes a bit of getting your head round! I'm sure everyone admired your bra-vado though..... |

Oh Pixie poor you, is that the racing fraternity's fault for getting you all revved up for a racehorse!!!
I have heard several people say to me they have wasted time and money looking all over the country for the right horse and yes sellers are time wasters too. Have had people ringing up about my young endurance mare but I am honest, she is a not a show horse or a race horse, but could be a great RC type and fantastic endurance prospect but not sure I can be bothered with another series of timeswasters. So I haven't advertised her and screen heavily the people who do call!
Poor you, good luck though and you can tell me all about at the next Huntingdon meeting!
Hope you're not too battered and bruised! Keeping looking you'll find it in the end,
Paul |

I didn't actually pick up the reins proper until I'd tried several other things first. Stood right up at one point and let the rein out - keeping a contact and she did slow a bit - I wasn't quick enough to take advantage of that. Like I said Rider Error. My friend who used to race ride for a living said I didn't actually do anything too wrong. It was just a mis-communication. hey ho. You live and learn.
The lady selling said that the mare had never had anyone off before EVER. Oh well there has to be a first time for everything. In fairness don't think the saddle did her any favours. Lady did offer me a race saddle but in my wisdom (or lack of it) didn't think that was appropriate so she put on a pony saddle. Quite small but wasn't too tight.
I didn't actually start canter work on my boy until he'd been out of racing for nearly a year. I've never pretended to be a great rider and am not going to start now.
I'm not that battered or bruised. I have got a lump on my forehead which was caused by a gate handle and not related to this horse in any way shape of form. That hurts more.
I am laughing and I am fine. And would I do it again? Yes probably. Although may have tried a different tac-tic on the first corner. You only live once might as well try and enjoy yourself.
Thanks Rhoni and Paul Hope to see you again soon. |

Hi Pixie, Sorry to hear of your mis-hap, thanks for the offer but not sure that I want to eat rubber track either, I have never known any race/exrace arabs, but have known a few thoroughbreds that have been re-schooled, or bought from Ascot then taken back the next month, but the re-schooled ones had to be walked for quite a while before even going into a trot on grass or surfaces as they would just go, which is what they are trained to do in the first place, good luck with the ID, let me know how you get on thanks for the thought Marion |

Oh Pixie!! You were brave to go on a track on a race horse. I wouldn't have done. When I got Ollie I gave him 2 months in the field before I rode him at all and then I built things up from the outdoor school to hacking out etc. The first time I took him on a grass track I made the mistake of turning around at the end which he took to mean "The Start" so we bounced the whole way back, which made me giggle and he thought that was a good thing and bounced some more!! If you liked the horse why not try again but not up the track, maybe a hack out and see what you think? One really needs to take one's time with the racing chaps and then they are marvelous as you of course know. |

Oh dear Pixie, must confess to a little giggle at your story! You are a braver woman than I that's for sure. I remember going to try a pony out when I was a child and it was kept at a racing yard I forget where. Thankfully my brother got on it first and went out onto the gallops and I have never seen a pony go so fast! There was no way I was getting on so we scuttled off pdq! When, and note I do say when and not if, you find your new friend I think you should defo write a book about all your experiences! |

Lady rang us back about the ID - not the cream jobbie as she didn't know I was wearing it - to say she thinks her facilities are too waterlogged. We may go tomorrow now. |

Pixie you know you dont really want an ID - go and try her again but this time take the contact up nice and firm BEFORE the speed starts building upthen you just let out a notch each time you want to go a bit faster (says she who gets carted almost daily!)You could always take a GP saddle with you - bet it would make a huge difference actually ignore the above, Im just saying what I would do as the thought of having a nice rubber gallop track close by is making me drool - and Im totally crazy go and see the ID then - sensible move |

So glad you didnt hurt yourself (but what a great story). I drove past the retrained racehorse facility the other day - perhaps you should look there too now you have a taste for rubber track.. Theres a postitive out of this though isnt there ? You like very forward light horses . Perhaps this should be added to the wish list (I notice that brakes are already on it..) |

I seem to have a rib problem today. Its fine until I try to pick something up off the floor. Canter to trot transitions and trot to walk transitions ouch. did most of them standing up in the stirrups - it didn't hurt like this. Upwards transitions fine but downwards - ow ow that hurts. I wonder why. Friday was ages ago. |

bruising takes a good few days to get to the real ouch factor... gets worse brfore improving.... take some anti-inflammatories for the swelling and paracetamol for the pain.... but take the anti-inflammatories as a course, every eight hours (i think) and you'll be fine in no time...

15.2 11 year old Grey Gelding
Went to Portsmouth 2.1/2 hours there M25 was bad and 1 hr 50 mins back. 240 miles round trip.
Rang the woman this morning and asked her to pop him on the lunge just to check he was sound. She said he was sound but had a small cut on his shoulder and had given him some anti biots and bute.
Oh you all think you know whats coming. Well you don’t…….. very panto.
She walked him up the lane. I say to my friend its hocks are not right. She says are you sure, its tail is in the way. Trotted it up. Now I’m really sure. Friend is noooo we can’t have come all this way. Me well perhaps it always moves like that or perhaps where its been stood in.
Got the woman to tack it up, walk, trot, canter. Now if it hasn’t got arthritic hocks then I am the Real Pixie Queen of Pixie Land. And its been on bute today.
For goodness sake.
So I say to the woman. He is lame. She hadn’t got a bleeding clue. My friend was embarrassed as she can see I'm cross and starts saying oh I think he may be a little too sharp for what we want to do. I say. No he isn’t too sharp he is just too crippled. I was sooooo cross.
And there endeth the rant - well tonights one anyway..... i'm sure I'll have another moan tomorrow.
