Hello people.......... want to know the latest......

Went to see a super horse on Saturday. Really nice boy. Went out on a little hack walk and trotted.

Went back for a second view Monday - another little hack - walk, trotted, cantered in his field. Very nice boy.

Bear in mind that it is a 4 hour round trip. So that 8 hours travelling and £60'ish worth of diesel.

Previously had some one in endurance look at him and they thought he was too well schooled for what they wanted to do. The lady was really pleased that they didn't want him and was glad I wanted to do hacking, the odd show, schooling, lessons and dressage on him etc etc.

She then rings me this morning. Not sure if i'm quite the right home. Thats fair enough and she wants the best for her boy. Absolutely fine. Why let me go back the second time them?

Could she have a chat with my friend. Hello she's MY friend. Anyway they have a chat. My friend was completely honest as have I been.

Lady then rings me back....... oh you just know what is coming......

Lady - “I have spoken to your friend and er erm eh erm er what shall I say”

Me - (bored)“its quite clear you don’t want to sell him to me and that’s fine he is yours to decide what is best for his future. You don't need to torture yourself like this. But I would also like to say that I am not sure you want to sell him to ANYONE and perhaps before you let anyone else view him you should think long and hard about this”

Lady - “perhaps you are right”.

TIMEWASTER

I'm fed up. Anyone out there who reads this and wants to waste my time. Think again.

Trouble is timewasters don't read these threads and don't realise what .....holes they are.

Poor Pixie! You are absolutely right - she doesnt actually want to sell does she? (I know that feeling as it happens..) What a dreadful waste of your time though. When I bought Spider I was terrified the vendor would change her mind (her daughter burst into tears when I said I'd like him, it was awful)
Have you got any more lined up to view?

You have my every sympathy, this is exactly what happened to me,we went to see an arab mare,my daughter hacked her out,we loved her.
We really believed we had cracked it, organised for the vetting, which was then cancelled by the owner and the vet phoned me an hour before she was due to go to tell me.
When I contacted her she said she just couldnt bear to part with her, which I totally understand,I could never part with any of mine either,,she was a really lovely lady, but I was still really upset by her decision
Susan(still searching!)

Well, at least the vendor turned up which is more than I can say for the owner of the horse I went to view a while ago. I waited, and waited, and waited, no-one bothered to turn up, or even phone to say they werent coming, no apology, no nothing. I was well p**d off I can tell you.

Some of the questions I'm asking at the moment must make me sound like a mad woman.

i.e., are you absolutely sure your horse is sound. are you absolutely sure you want to sell your horse. Like i said makes me sound like a mad woman.

I'm sorry for you too Nutter. You are right though - chins up and onwards and upwards.

wow you are unlucky..
but l can see this from both sides
l once drove 5 hours to see a horse only to arrieve and discover the lady had sold it...[and l had a car phone at the time]
a couple of years later l went to see another horse of hers..there were three people waiting to view it...she made them all wait [l bought it]
usually people who come to view horse bring the 'equine expert' who usually knows nothing about anything, just think they do... they talk utter rubbish, but the person buying is usually convinced that they are the bees knees...one 'instructor' could not get a school master on the right leg coming off the corner of the sandschool...and the level of riding was the worst l have seen for a long time..rising from a trot was painfull to watch...the potential purchaser should have still be on a leading rain...the horse was very good riverted to the safest riding school hack you have ever seen...l think he was worried that she would fall off [bless]
half the time l think people are just out for a days entertainment or a free ride...[or in some cases wannabe riders]
oh then they never call back...ever
you just can't win
ash
ps..on the other hand l do think my horses chose me..and l always know when a horse really 'gels' with a human...and thats the one!
so keep looking you WILL find the horse of your dreams or he will find you!

OK guys - what are your views.

There a couple of younsters for sale. 5/6 year olds. They have been backed and started.

Do any of you have any views about buying a green horse. I'm just not sure I have the confidence to bring on a green horse. I have the knowledge but I lack confidence.

I have good people around me who are used to backing and starting youngsters (not Arabs) and they would help me as much or as little as I needed.

I don't want to waste anyone's time so before I go looking can anyone offer any advice to persuade me that it is either a good or bad idea to pursue. I don't mind what your opinion is any advice is greatfully received.

Thanks

I went through this dilemma before I bought Ollie and I am so glad I waited for him as I could just get on and ride him. Personally I wouldn't take on something too green for the same reasons you have stated Pixie, but, having said that if you have help it might work okay. You must of course remember that a green horse looks to you for direction and if you aren't confident it's unlikely that he is going to be either. Also you will need to assess just how green is green. Totally might be a disaster but just a bit green could be fine and then of course a lot depends on the temperament of the individual horse. Oooh what a dilemma!! Anyway that's my ten penn'rth!

I totally agree with Suelin.
I would have no qualms about buying a youngster/green horse - proving that the horse was what you wanted! There is green and then very green, both my Welsh ponies were green - 1 a youngster and 1 much older - my (now) 16 year old son has ridden/schooled them both to County level and he will be schooling my young Arab after she has been baacked. Sounds like you have people around to help out - if the horse is right go for it - at least with youngsters there should be less of other peoples mistakes to put right!!

I bought Spider 'backed and ridden away' in retrospect I was too much of a novice, but Pixie you dont sound like a novice to me! I think as long as you have great support it works fine. You need someone nice and confident to get on them for you when you are feeling a bit shaky and the money to pay a professional to continue the horse's ridden education. Also you need to choose a nice laid back one in the first place!

Go for it, I bought Shida as a green five year old and although we had the odd moment and at times I wondered if i'd done the right thing we didn't really have any major problems. And I agree with Arachnid go for one with a laid back nature.

Raz was 14 when he was given to me... he was a bit green, very little in the way of schooling needed to see more and do more, he was very unfit..... he was also gelded at 8years.... nice combination for my first horse!! Beleive me, when i was looking for a horse he was the opposite of what i was looking at! I wanted a "been there, done that boy"....
but I took things very slowly with him... I totally respected him and felt i needed to earn his respect... We walked out for 20 minutes in hand three times a week for three months before I even go on board!! I did so much ground work with him... incorporating lots of natural horsemanship and we were also doing a bit of gentle work on the lunge...

I did this ALL on my own... I am on my own in a field so no other liveries to help... I also had also only been riding for 6 years... some people think it was a very silly move, but i just knew that Raz was my boy and he felt right....

When I felt the time was right, I tacked him up... led him to the field and quietly mounted... we walked in the field for no more than 10 minutes, I gave him a big cuddle and jumped off... we did this for ages, slowly adding more schooling exercises and different gaits...

Then we started hacking - very exciting - i'd been waiting for ages for this!!

We now have weekly lessons to take us further on.... he sustained a back injury from messing around in the field so that set us back a little and had to start again... but he has been so worth it and I really trust him and he trusts me....

This long story has just been to get to the point that if I can do it... then you definately can..... Your confidence will grow with your bond, especially when you see your new horses progress...

I firmly beleive that if you feel that he is the right horse, then everything else can be worked through, regardless of age, schooling, manners... I do beleive that incidentals can be worked through and resolved...

.....sorry, waffling now.......

If you have the knowledge you will find the confidence. It is the greatest feeling in the world, to sit on something you have started yourself.
Why take on other peoples problems. A youngster is like a book full of blank pages waiting to be written and if you go wrong you can only blame yourself. I love youngsters they are so rewarding, and you can always ask for help

Hi Pixie,

I would go for a youngster as a preference, purely because I prefer to school a horse 'my way' and form a lifelong bond. Also I don't think that a youngster is any more difficult than an older horse, purely because if you take a horse at any age away from a 'location' you will always have to go through the 'honeymoon period'. Some horses, again regardless of age, will adjust quicker than others, depends on their temperament. So I would say go and see these youngsters, and see how you feel with them. Good luck hun, one of them could be your lifelong pal!!!

Carla, xx.

Just sit tight and wait for the right one as said so many times already tou WILL know when its the right one,
I bought years ago my old boy who i thought would be an easy ride
Good god he was a Nutter!!!!! 15 years as green as they come and no mouth!!! a bulshy cob sec d, unyet when i used to jump on my daughters arab who is a star i never felt safe!!!
proberly becouse she is to small for me so i felt perched on top where as the old boy had had four big corners!!!
I dont think really we can put age breed anything into any order when looking its just usually the ones you least think will suit you that do!! and become your friend for life.
Keep hanging in there and keep looking,
I am also a great believer that everything is meant to be, so maybe trying all these horses and seeing meeting there owners is just giving you more experiance and you are learning from it,
I can remember when we were looking for Danika we were about to give up towards the end of 18 months!!!
Then her mare just landed in our yard to be sold on!!!
Joke was i had not even contenplated looking for a arab for her!!!
So it proves everything is meant to be.
