Went to bed at 10pm absolutely knackered...... woke up at 12 - fell asleep again at some point as woke up again at 2am was still away at 3.12 - put tele on at this point and was watching some OU programme - sad cow. Must have drifted off again as woke up again at 4.37am turned the tele off. Alarm went off at 5.45 and finally crawled out of bed at 6.10.
I am generally not a good sleeper anyway but last night was torture.
I feel quite sick - how stupid is this....... ridiculous behaviour. |

Pixie has just phoned me on the way back from the vetting. Sadly the horse failed. I will leave Pixie to fill in the details, she will be home in a couple of hours.
Such a shame hun, but I am sure the right horse will find you.

Hello Gang - Grumpy Pixie here - told you it was "Hockey"
Are you ready for the Book....
Vet arrived did all the normal checks in stable. Vet had hands all over it everywhere didn't even swish its tail. Quite happy to let him poke around in its mouth. Vet said this is a nice little horse.
We had talked about the hock before he arrived. And he asked the lady did she know any history relating to the thickened hock. She just said she thinks he had an accident before her friend bought him. Backed into something.
Soooo pleased it was my vet.
Anway get him out of the stable walked up and down the drive in hand. Taking careful note of the hock but now noting that every fourth or so step the toe caught the gravel which you could see in the school but not to that degree.
Then trotted him in hand up the drive. Now no "hockeyness" and no dragging toe.
OK now to flexion tests. Nearside front - yay round of applause Offside front - yay another round of applause Nearside hind - oh dear - poor Pony didn't really want his leg lift up for that amount of time. So my vet being the kind man he is did only 30 seconds instead of the minute. When she tried to trot him away well it was very sad if not a little cruel. My vet told the lady to stop. He was broken!!!! Absolutely broken!!!! So we let him get over that which took a good 10 minutes and then did the offside hind. Round of applause for that leg even though the other leg was still not right.
So vet said ok we need to have a chat if you put him back in his stable we'll come over to you in a minute.
So off they went we stayed in the drive. Vet said that he couldn't recommend continueing with the vetting and recommended I did not purchase him. He said it was a shame as he was a nice little horse but thought that when i started to get his legs further underneath him and started lateral work the pony would breakdown; And certainly on that basis wouldn't be able to do the things I wanted to do. He also felt that the pony did have some pain in the hock but had learned to live with that level of pain on a daily basis but felt that it should be looked at.
I asked how did he think that he'd got through the vet gates at the ride or why I didn't feel anything with all the trotting last week. He said that very likely that the pony could go on for years like that in straight lines but the moment you ask it to work correctly it wouldn't be able to or it would breakdown.
So off I go to the stables and speak to the lady and say to her that I was sorry because he was a really nice horse but couldn't risk buying him as my vet didn't believe he would be able to do the things I wanted to.
The lady looked a bit shocked and also said well how did he get through all the vet gates. I told her exactly what my vet had said. ie. he could probably go on in straight lines for years and I said that I hope he did. I also told her that my vet had said that that the pony did have a mild degree of pain but he'd probably learned to live with it.
So hey ho thats today's tale. |

Oh Pixie that is a real shame! But just goes to show it's WELL WORTH getting prospective purchases vetted!

oh thats really such a shame.... i am genuinely sad for you and the gee gee!! It was all feeling so positive! I'm such a saddo - I even woke up thinking about your vetting and must log on as soon as I got home!! I was anticipating such a different outcome.....
I know you really don't want to go for a youngster but maybe it really is something to consider!
You could train the horse to be the boy you want him to be - a fresh canvas (not meaning to belittle a horses mind in anyway there!! but you know what i mean) You would know his full history - and you could share the "first" experiences with him so you know exactly wat he's been through... or maybe a young gelding from a trusted breeder looking for his first home.... Maybe this way you would have more chance at finding your "second" and less chance of disappointment......
You probaly shut off as soon as you read youngster.... but maybe its a good possibility.......
This thread really is turning out to be a heartbreaking epic!! It started off being amusing tales of horse viewing/search! I'd love a happy ending soon please pixie!!!! |

Thanks everyone for your words/advice/opinions.
Yes it is a shame for me but do you know what is MORE of a shame..... and makes me feel a little sick. Actually strike that a lot sick.....
That poor boy will probably carry on being nice and gentle and doing whoever's bidding and not have the opportunity of a good vet look at him and investigating that hock properly and at least finding some way of giving him pain relief.
Also - and yes i know you don't start paragraphs with Also but you do tonight - where was I? Oh yes Also someone will come along who wants a nice little horse and not bother with the vetting and they will run him into the ground with his sore leg.
I am torturing myself - my vet did say it was just mild discomfort but I know you all understand where I am coming from.
Someone kick the soap box out from under my feet. I am getting on my own nerves now.
Another night of not sleeping - oh joy! |

Oh no poor Pixie! Lets hope the lady who owns him sells him as a light hack, now she knows. Presumably he'd find the strung out Western stuff easier? You said he was hocky. Large glass of wine required and maybe comforting chocolate.. |

Just a thought Pixie but if you go to www.loch ness riding.co.uk and look on where they have Endurance Horses you'll find a 10 yr old 15-2 pure bred Arab (Prince Omar)which has just done it's BTF (SERC - means it's just done a 50km and gained Bronze Thistle status) It's not officially for sale but when I spoke to the owner - Candy Cameron - she said that it could be to the right person. I'm looking also as I said earlier but this is too old for me but you never know might be worth thinking about??? |

Thanks Ros that really kind of you but its over 500 miles away and probably 8 or 9 hours driving. I suppose i could fly up but then it looks a good way from the airport. And I would want to go more than once. I shall put it in my "intersting" folder. I have lots of things in my "interesting" folder. I shall go through it again tomorrow. Thank you.
What are you looking for? |
