How long does it take for a stallion aged 7 that has been used in the past to calm down after being gelded, ie to go out in a field with mares I am getting confliction advice one person said it could take a couple of years!!! Thanks
It really depends, some do calm down within a month.. some need ?? months! Others will allways try to cover mares!!
But he should go for him self at least a month, because he can still cover and get mares pregnant shortly after he's been gelded!! Talk to the vet about that.
My vets advised that it should be 3 MONTHS after gelding that a stallion should remain seperate from mares, as it is possible for them to get a mare in foal during this time as sperm can be retained in the system. This does not mean that if they are settled enough that they cannot be turned out with geldings during this time.
I was told exactly the same as Pashon, for exactly the same reasons. I did a bit of research and found that the general consensus 'physical-wise' was 3 months.
However, I agree with others that it will depend on the horse with regard to his actual behaviour with other horses!
