Heroic horse saves woman from death by cow
August 15 2007

A horse has been credited with saving the life of a woman attacked by an angry cow in Scotland.

The horse's deeds were reported in The Scotsman newspaper.

The farmer, Fiona Boyd, 40, was reportedly attempting to reunite a cow with its calf in a herd.

The Scotsman reported that the cow attacked when it sighted its calf just as Mrs Boyd approached the young animal.

The cow knocked her to the ground and then put its full weight on top of her.

Mrs Boyd's 15-year-old chestnut mare came to her aid, kicking at the cow to make it move. She was able to crawl safety while the mare continued kicking out at the cow.

Mrs Boyd was treated at hospital for bad cuts and bruising.

Way back in the mid 70's I was courting the son of a dairy farmer - he told me how their race horse mare saved his mothers life when she was walking through the dairy cows & they swarmed on her... the mare was in the adjoining field & she jumped the leccy fence & fended off the cattle allowing his mum to regain her feet - the cows had knocked her down - & scramble through the fence to safety - apparently the mare went for the cows with bared teeth & hooves aimed to kill!!!!

Wow ! I can see my OH old horse doing that, he once stood for two hours with his head behind the field shelter while we ( stupid) humans searched and searched for a lost lamb, with the ewe blaring, he then started walking backwards and forwards to get our attention, saying " oi! stupid humans, the lamb is here, behind the shelter caught up in a folded tarpauline " We rescued the lamb, the horse sighed and then wandered off....! He was a clever old sod. Polly

Shows how intelligent horses really are. All owener/carers must have had a good bond with these horses for them to care their fate. Lovely stories though.

What amazing stories I often get chased by herds of cows when out riding and they are very intimidating I got pretty scared when they charged at us and was thinking what am I going to do now, get off and chase them or try and ignore them. As I was pondering this toskin my gelding decided to sort things out and starting double barrelling them, he must have sensed my anxiety He was just thinking about turning and chasing after them, but they got the message. Every time I see cows now I know I am safe in his hooves

In my experience you are far safer on horseback crossing a field with cattle in than on foot! Apart from the one occassion years ago riding with a friend on her Arab - we did wonder if our mounts would be capable of jumping a 5-bar gate when we were chased by some Highland cattle.....thankfully our mounts speed allowed us to get to the gate & get throught it before the hairy beasts reached us
