Hi Tracey, the best thing I ever did was to invest in rubber matting, several of mine were similar to yours! so now it's rubber matting for all with a 'poo strip' about two feet wide along the back of either Hemcore or Megazorb, it only took a few days for them to work out where to 'go', I now have a very small muck heap, can do all six - including filling water buckets and haynets in well under an hour - and the biggest plus is I don't have such a bad back If you don't want to bother with the matting, Hemcore is really good, use 6-8 bales to start with (for a 12x12 box) and only take out the wet patch about once a week, disturb it at little as possible so it packs down into a level bed.
Have fun!!! |

Yes - will vote for rubber matting I just put down a small area of Easibed (brill stuff!!!) for a pee/wee area. Horses hapy to lie down on matting.....well they will lie down on bare earth outside! |

the problems with a messy horse and matting with little bed means they will lie in it and so get very mucky and their rugs stink in winter. i use mats and a very thick shavings bed- seems to work. he used to be awful. also eats straw! i have him out as much as poss also- he is in from 9am till when i come to ride about lunch time so he sleeps when he is in |

Have to say I haven't had that problem, my messy ones all ended up pretty clean, maybe I've just been lucky! |

I have a mare who creates a very wet bed and have found out that by putting more bedding in she is cleaner. I don't know how that works but it does!! She has rubber matting topped with a good bed of Nedz Bedz Pro which is a bit cheaper than shavings. My clean horse is on Easibed which is also really good but slightly more expensive. Good luck |

Hi Tracey,
Leisha used to be on rubber matting and shavings and was quite clean,
As you have a problem with her weight and eating the straw, I would put rubber matting in her stable and put either shavings or similar in the corner and even the dirty horses will rather pee there because they don't like it splashing up their legs,
You can skip ou so quickly each day too, even the foals learn from an early age they have a pee & poo corner,

I use rubber matting with shavings, cost a fortune to start with but saves me ££££ and hrs of work, they soon get the idea and mine mess, wee all in same area now and are very clean and easy, on straw they stank from wee but shaving/rubber dont smell and a lot cleaner |

Hi Tracey,
Thats good news
We have some mares that poo and just trample it everywhere, but with a small amount of shavings I just sweep it out and put fresh it it is so quick and easy,

I second Helena - the bigger the bed the better! I love straw and soon found that a huge bed is cleaner and easier to muck out than an average one. Also putting fresh on the bottom and then pulling the sides down makes for easier cleaning of the wet areas as it really soaks it up. Helps too if they like to eat it when you put the new in the bottom.

I have all three of mine on three different types of bedding at the moment. Straw, shavings and Aubiose. I have always like straw but my gelding will eat it so have him on Aubiose. The mare churns her bed up so she is on shavings. It doesnt seem to move to bad, The filly lays down a lot and doesnt eat her bed so she is on straw. I to am thinking it would be better to just get mating and only have little bed. I spend so much time mucking out |

If horse is very messy on rubber matting - use a breathable NZ instead of a stable rug - easy to wash off!
