HI just wondered if i could pick your brains! i have a five year old maiden mare who always comes into season 21 days on the dot. on her last season she ran with my stallion for a week, having lots of fun! before she went back out with the girls. she was due in again on saturday. i brought her home on thurs (19 days) and she immediatelty showed to my boy so she went back out with him and he covered her. today (20days) she is not interested and gives him the daggers look. any thoughts
hi, thanks for that. the thing that is puzzling me is that where she is normally 21 days exactly, if he covered her at 19 days at the end of her cycle, she would surely have started her season at about 15/16 days into her cycle. is it at all possible that she took on her previous season and is it worth getting her scanned to see what is going on? why are horses always such a worry!
I have known of mares who would stand to be covered the next "season" even though they were in foal so it is worth getting her checked. If you leave it 16 to 18 days since the stallion covered her and then have her scanned the vet will be able to tell if she is in foal from the recent covering or the previous one by the size of the foetus.
brilliant, thanks for that. thats sort of what i was thinking. i was interested to hear that you have known mares in foal stand to be covered. it just all seems odd that she is normally so regular and now seems to have gone a bit haywire! still will speak to my vet on monday and see what he wants to do. thanks again
I would wait for at least 16 days from the last covering before having her scanned as if she is in foal from the last covering the vet won't be able to tell if she is scanned now and you will have to have her scanned again; more expense!
yes your right. she is still out with him but whilst they are very friendly there is no activity or real interest on either part!! i just find it all so odd, but then thats horses for you. will keep you posted. thanks again x
