Hi i have a 6year old pure bred mare who is very hormonal to the point of distraction.shes fine with people but can be very temperamental towards other horses.she makes weird little squeaking noises and is suirting buckets at all horses concerned male or female, its affecting the way she goes for me etc.i have tried harmony supplement with her but not much difference has been noticed and was really looking for advice as to what to try with her from people who have had similar situations.she stresses in the stable cant be left out alone is very defensive over food has adopted a younger horse in the field as her own and is being a bully towards my 3 yr old gelding whilst looking after the yearling.if i take her out the filed she stresses till shes back in if i take my 3 yr old out she stresses badly up and down the fence and if the baby goes out she goes through the fencing! HELP! THANKS :)

God you must be worried.
Have you spoken to your Vet, can they do anything to help?
I wish my mare was a little more like yours, she is away at stud at present & hasn't shown herself in season
Good luck with your girl, keep us posted |

You could ask your vet about trying Regumate. It may well help her control her hormones a bit more, rather than being so reactive to everything.
Your mare sounds similar to mine and I have to say that most of it is probably just the way she is. Worth trying anything you can to help though! |

I have to agree with Liv and ask your vet about Regumate, this can be an expensive option but will put your mare back into a normal cycle.
Is the yearling a filly or colt? It sounds like your mare has taken on the role of being "herd leader". Has this behaviour started this season or is she normally like this during the spring/summer?
Some friends have tried different hormonal treatments, and each mare has reacted differently, so I would say it's a bit of a "trial and error" situation, but hopefully your vet will be able to advise - good luck!!!

Hi Arabian
I don't often post on here but am an addicted reader, but I felt had to reply to you. We took on an extremely and I mean extremely temperamental, hormonal and sometimes positively horrible mare. Like many others we tried various herbal supplements to no avail. Our vet did various checks, bloods, internal etc but found nothing significant. I mentioned our problems to my local feed merchant who put me on to a supplement called Hormonise. Absolutely fantastic. What more can I say. We now have the sweetest, calmest and affectionate mare that even my 10 year old daughter can handle. Cost around £16.00 and after the loading dose lasts me approx 5 weeks.

Try "Hormonease". I was given a purebred mare, aged 15 last winter who was quiet as a mouse then, but come sumer, she squirts continually, and actually went for my stallion over the fence (Cantered all the way across the field to do so!) whilst we were covering another mare. She was on Hormonease before she was given to me, but seemed to not need it over the winter so weaned her off it. We were going to re-introduce it now, but as the plan was to breed from her we covered her 2 weeks ago. I'm convinced she is in foal, as all hormonal behaviour has stopped! But the Hormonease would be well worth a try, it came very highly recommended from her last owner, who had tried all manner of hormone supplments previously Good luck.

hi all.... quick update .... the yearling moved to yorkshire today and my mare has settled much better without him in the field she has now decided that my 3 yr old gelding is ok after all and there seems to be a lull in her behaviour.ive tried v-calm which didnt have much affect did make her seem calmer but didnt touch the hormonal behaviour so then went on to harmony which didnt work for her so ive ordered oestress to try but after reading your posts im thinking of trying the hormonease first as i dont know anyone that has tried oestress. To be honest im thinking shes broody so if all else fails i think i might breed from her next year as ive been recommended doing that by a few people, hopefully the hormonease will work.do you have an idea of how quick i will see results if it is going to work for her?i will definately keep you in the know :) a big thankyou once again, lisa. |
