Has anyone elses horses ever had granuloma? Quinn has a small amount of it on his back. The vet says that it doesn't affect him in anyway and although the causes are not certain, in his case she thinks it could be overfeeding of carrots!!!! They will go away in time (apparently!) and she said not to worry. They are not visable when you look at him, but you can feel them over his back when you run your hand over him. They aren't sore in any way, but just quite annoying, to me at any rate! They don't come up any more than they are with riding him and I am at a real loss as to what if anything I could do to speed up their departure?!

Amelia had two little fungal granulomas on her face - and they were removed by the vet and just as well, as apparently they are lethal. How she got them is anyone's guess as they are supposed to be unusual in hot countries which is the only place they usually crop up. Having said that, the vets have now had a couple of cases in our area, so it's either aliens again or some crop throwing out weird spores!
Good luck with yours.

Zahera my late Arab mare had several on her back (saddle area) & a couple on her one quarter. Never had any probs with the ones under her saddle - I found using a pure wool numnah helped & I had a flexi panel (Trapezius) saddle which spread the weight & I think this also helped. She did endurance up to 50km for several years & never once were they made sore.

Will be phoning the vets again in the morning!!!! I've just searched through the internet on Granuloma and it appears from a vet report that I have read that antibiotics are used to treat Granuloma. I am not impressed that the vet that came to vaccinate my two, didn't offer this as a solution to the problem!

Hi Quinn, Spider had these in February and the vet said they were granuloma. At worst the hair came off them and they looked a bit pink, but they have gone now completely. The vet said that some horses need an operation to remove them if they interfere with riding but mostly they just come and go and are quite painless. I think Spider's came when he started to shed his coat. I did try Dermobian after advice on AL. I am not sure it made any difference but perhaps it did since they've gone. Its a funny green ointment you can buy online. Its been added to our medicine cabinet and used by other people on my yard for other skin complaints too. You could give it a try! Julia |

Ooh thanks for that. Will try that and see. The other thing that I am going to try is worming!! My farrier was here this morning and I asked him to have a look and see what he thought. He immediately asked me if I had overwormed Quinn at some point (which I had by mistake..........instead of 450kg worth he ened up with the whole thing 700kg worth), it was at that point that the lumps came out on him. He said that the same thing had happened with one of his horses and that when he wormed him again they went!!! SO..........I'm off to get more wormers (horse are due again anyway) and will try the Dermobian cream. One way or another I am getting rid of these things!!
Thanks guys. |

Just found out that Dermobian cream is no longer available! It was withdrawn from circulation a while ago!! Typical. I've bought some Green Oils Gel instead. Hopefully between the worming and the Green Oils they will go. |

Sorry Quinn, it is now marketed as 'Dermapred' but its the same stuff apparently. It isnt made here, I think mine came from the Netherlands. If you put Dermapred into Google you'll find it. There was some debate over the legitimacy of buying prescription ointment from abroad, but we have used it to no ill effect (in fact I used it this morning on what looks like nettle stings on Spider's nose)

Hi - see my thread on little lumps - they have cleared used New Zealand Manuka Honey 16+ UMF. Might be worth a try - I discovered its uses while researching sarcoids. |

Natalie, I've only just seen the FAO!! Many thanks I have responded to it. Be great to see your photos of Monosterra. I've just gotten some new ones of AJA Ben Nazif and he has really blossomed. Will send you some shots of my gelding (done in April!!) and I'd love to see some shots of your filly.
Caro23, I never thought of Honey. I'll source some and give it a try. I'm keen to try anything!

Hi Caro23, how much honey did you use on your mares back? Did you rub it well into the hair? My problem is likely to be my youngster licking it all off!!! |

Dulcie's lumps were on her tummy - although she is pretty flexible so probably could lick it off if she wanted. I covered the area quite thickly but spent some time rubbing it in. It smells very distinctive, quite medicinal so you can actually smell the antibacterial qualities it has. Dulcie turned her nose up at it when I had some on my fingers. |
