I have just got my loan horse back after 2 years to find that he has completely changed shape from a rather lardy table-top boy to a sleeker (almost thin!) streamlined version of his former self! His saddle was floating around on top of him and desperately needed re-flocking, which I had done at the weekend. My problem now is that I don't feel secure in the saddle any more. Maybe it will be better when the flocking settles down a bit, but I feel I need more support in front, ie bigger knee rolls, suede seat etc.
I will give it a go with my seat saver, but what I really want to know is what are the most comfy, secure saddles? I have been advised to look at the Ideal Jessica, but as I don't do dressage, do I need a dressage saddle? I just want something that is going to make me feel safe and confident again ... Really shouldn't have sold my Bob Marshall treeless, but that's another story!
So come on peeps, let's have your best saddle advice please!!
Nicky

hi nicky , gosh you will get swamped with replies now! is it the chesnut in your signature? the one with u on board he looks lovely.! i guess it depends on what u want to do..perhaps a good reasonably straight-er GP saddle would be good? i do love ideal saddle and they do a very, very comfy gp version ( which i have on my PBA ) its like a armchair i am sure you will get lots of suggestions though and it also depends on your budget..if was me feelin flush i'd probaly go for a ASC saddle they are beautiful.. or you could possibly have one made? you could also try this website http://www.saddlecompany.co.uk/contact.php
the saddles are very lightweight as they are leather with i think sythetic stuffing cant remember but i have had a verona one and it was very good quality indeed!and the tree is adjustable as well which is useful , hope this helps a bit good luck

Hi Sazz,
Yes Tanni is the chestnut with me on top - we were trying out a western at the time as you can see! I have an ASC Sylvan for Rossi which I tried on Tann but it didn't feel deep enough on him which is weird to say the least! He really throws himself into his trot and I find I'm getting thrown all over the place. It may be because he hasn't been ridden for a year and I need to get us both balanced again, I don't know. Lisa said I could have a sit on her Ideal Jessica later in the week, so I will give that a go. Have looked at the Wow saddles, they look good but seem big for a pure-bred?? |

I have a WOW on Rowan one of my Arabs - its great as they are so adjustable - the saddler can tailor them to suit the horse (& rider!). I also use Ortho-Flex - they have self adjusting panels so can fit a hugh range of horses....also the Endurance Cutbacks I have are just so secure!
I am about to have some saddles from the US which are also highly adjustable - they also do a lightweight version & also Western - which are much lighter than traditional Western & are also highly adjustable. I don't want to say any more until I've had a good try of them on my many different riding horses (mostly Arabs!) - they will be the first in the UK! |

Judith, please keep me informed as I would be interested in an adjustable saddle , especially if I can get a lightwieght one. As you know we are great fans of Reactor Panel saddles ,but they are heavy.Polly PS.... by the way,...the horse I wanted was not to be, sadly ....but......not wanting to tempt fate ....watch this space ! Judith, your new saddles sound very interesting! Looking forward to hearing more ...
Jenni, don't worry - they don't like the rain either! They look quite smug when I pop them into their stables in the mornings and it's p**ing down outside!
The saddler suggested I give it at least a couple of months to settle, and then if I still don't feel happy, to contact him again. He carries loads of different makes/styles and can get hold of virtually anything, so I think it's a case of see how it goes really. |

Hiya
Its supposed to be summer, and its raining, i can guess they don't like the rain. Thats a good idea from the saddler, seeing as e needs abit more muscle toning, even though you feel you just want to hop onto him and just ride him. I suppose its also a question of trial and improvement, and just test some saddles and see which one is best that suit you and Tanni.
I might actually be down at the yard tonight, but still unsure.

Hellooo,
Im down the yard tonight if you want to get Tanni out not riding Akram hes having a day off. I think a lot of ur problems are coz Tanni is unbalanced at the moment which makes you feel like you are unbalanced. He just needs lots of slow work to build up some muscles and some lunging to help him learn to balance again. Its really difficult when they have had so much time off work it took me nearly a year to get Akram muscled and going well again after a 2 yrs break.
Ur welcome to try my ideal but I think you should wait till he is back to his old self before you do anything or you may find in 6 months you are needing to buy another one. Ebay has lots of ideals come up for sale you know what size he is as you can measure A's. |

Lisa, thanks for letting me try your saddle - it's defo got 'stickability' which is what I'm looking for! I think you're right about the timing thing - we've just got to take it slowly and do loads of walking/lungeing. Will persevere with my GFS for the mo (with fluffy seat saver!).
Jenni - love your signature piccies of the boys - very clever!! Hope to see you soon. |

Some people have got far to much time on their hands LOL!! No probs with the saddle it was good to have a go on Tanni. Theres no rush anyway so worth taking it slow and do more next season we can always go to Littlefield for some dressage maybe Jenni could bring Rossi tooo. |

Hi - Laura has an Ambassador WH saddle that although not suede or particularly built up at the knee has enough knee and thigh roll to stick anything the Big Lad can chuck at her Showing riders everywhere will sing the praises of good quality suede saddle (or just knee and seat) and the new sticky0bum jods with the rubber spots on... worth a try eh? |

Hi Have you thought of trying a Heather Moffatt Seat Saver - they are quite expensive but not as much as a new saddle - especially if yours fits your horse ? My old mare was very bouncy and I found it helped alot. They sell quite well second hand so worth a try - ebay ? Bec |
