Following a previous thread im now using Cortaflex on one of my mares that was a bit stiff at the back end. I just wondered if anyone knows roughly when I should be expecting a bit of a change.
Obviously I know it must depend on the horse and the degree of their stiffness etc.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks in advance. x

Hi Julie, If the cortaflex is going to work then you should see a difference within 4-7 days. If you dont see a difference then you should perhaps try a different joint supplement until you can find the particular one thats going to suit your mare. Are you using the new cortaflex HA? Good Luck. Jackie. x |

I would say to keep your mare on Cortaflex for about three months at least before deciding if it works or not as it will depend on the degree of damage as to how long it will take to work.

She has only been on it a week and I would definately be using it for a while till I see if it's working right. Fingers crossed! |

Hi Julie, Sorry if you got conflicting advise on your post. I was origionally given this advise by an A-liner who had been in contact with a suplier of the Olympic equestrian team who said that if a supplement was going to suit your horse and its particular condition you would see an improvement within the first few days and if you saw no improvement you probably wouldn't at all so to try another which may suit. I have tried 3 supplements on my old mare in the last 3 months including superflex 5 star, arthriflex and origional cortaflex with no improvement. Then tried cortaflex HA and saw a marked improvement within 5 days so will be sticking to this one. Hope you can find the one that works for you. Jackie. x |

There is a loading time and I think, after using it on an older horse with good results, you should give/allow a little longer, they used to recommend that you fed the liquid to get it into the system and started, then add a daily powder dose. I found, after the first few weeks, my mare was much better, she was on it for several months, each year, with good results...you couild also add cider vinigar & cod liver oil on a daily basis, leg wrapps if damp or cold or wet. and magnetic might also help. |

I tried Cortaflew on my 21 year old mare with no obvious results. Two months ago I started using Apple Cider Vinegar and she has really improved - her back legs stiffness are noticeably better and she has started lying down at night in her stable.
Just thought I mention it (it is much cheaper!) |

I like Cortaflex for the oldies when the ground gets hard. Newmarket Joint Supplement is meant to be excellent but you get it through your vet, don't know the cost. Rhus tox homeopathic tablets help the sort of arthritis that gets worse in cold, wet weather - I used to give 3 tablets twice a day to a 13.2. For humans they're supposed to be dropped onto or under the tongue to dissolve, but I just used to tip them from the dispenser into his feed.
Caro23, how much cider vinegar do you use? |

Newmarket joint supplment is £78 to £82.50 - just bought a new tub. it lasts forever though. you give them a full scoop to start then just half a scoop. about the size of a teaspoon. so £80 is a lot to lay out but it does last a very long time. |

Hi,
When I first got my ex racehorse (thoroghbred) all his joints would creak as he moved around his stable, all four legs every joint seemed to be affected.
I started him on Glucosamine and Condroitin Sulphate, which i get from Healthspan in Jersey.
The vet worked out a suitable dose for a horse was 2 tablets a day and I just pop them in his feed. It works out about £18 for 360 tablets so it lasts for ages.
Very effective he has now been on them for 4 and a half years and he does not creak any more, the tablets probably took about a month to take effect.
He is now 15 years old and creaks less than he used to.
