Hello again

Further to my other thread from last week on the discussion forum, I think I have noticed that Jack only bucks on flat ground - never while going uphill.

That may seem obvious, as it's harder to buck going uphill, but the difference in his canter going up a slight, or even less than slight slope, is amazing - he's really forward going and positively wants to go (even without me asking ). However, on the flat, he doesn't want to canter as much. He doesn't always buck, but the 3 occasions he has, they were all very nearly, or completely flat ground.

We have a dressage girth, and I wondered if I didn't have it fitted properly, and if his elbows were banging the buckles.

What is the correct position of the buckles on a dressage girth (feel stupid asking!)

He doesn't want to canter in the school either, but I have put that down to still being unbalanced and restricted to circles in ther, so finding it difficult (and boring, lol).

Or can anyone think of any other reason that might make him buck on the flat, but not uphill.

Thanks for reading

Kelly

Hi Kelly
Will he lunge or loose school ? May be an idea to try cantering him in manaege on lunge or loose school with no tack and see his reaction and movement. Then try with tack and see if he alters. If he is absolutely fine with both it may just be as everyone says balance - might help you to narrow down the cause ?????

HI Kelly! One reason could be that your body position is different uphill. If you are tipping forwards slightly on the flat (common when riders are a bit worried) this can block his shoulders, making it harder for him to get his front end off the ground and hence causing bucking when he's trying to free himself up to move on. Uphill, your weight is tipped back to where it's easier for him to canter.
Imagine you need to lean back when cantering & see if it helps.

sounds like a green problem- many green horses are on the forehand so will throw in a buck in canter to balance themselves
