Hello all
Following on from the 'diary of learning to jump' on Tea and Coffee, I am giving some thought to investing in a body protector for when I start teaching Jack to jump.
Does anyone have any recommendations please? I don't have a fortune to spend, which brings me onto my next question....
Would I be ok buying one off Ebay? Or are they like hats - you don't know what's happened to them etc?
Thanks in advance!

I have a Charles Owen which I find ok. I would probably be a bit dubious buying that sort of thing from ebay unless it was brand new. Sandie |

racesafe are good but it depends on which style you like as they do differ from majorly uncomfortable to bearable! i wouldnt do ebay for safety items unless thet were brand new as they reccommend to replace a body protector if you have a fall in one |

Body protectors should be fitted properly even if you think it fits it may not, if it dosent fit properly it could do more harm than good, I wouldnt buy a second hand one or new from ebay, worth getting something like that professionally fitted - most saddlers have a qualified fitter, Sorry if it seems i on my high horse but you would not believe how many H/Riders sustain more serious injuries due to poorly fitting B/Protecters + hats,., Also, god forbid you were involved in accident where you were hurt if a poorly fitting hat/B.Protector was involved would be goodbye insurance payout,., |

I have a Rodney Powell which is a really good body shell with shoulders (which are sometimes omitted but I think are rather important!). They can be rather warm to wear sometimes - I echo that they do need to fit well - and you do have to have a larger coat if you're doing showjumping (the super thin Ellen Whittaker look isn't really possible if you want to be super safe). They're expensive too, but sometimes it's best not to take chances! |

Rodney Powell also make-to-measure for pretty much the same price as off-the-peg which is a very good idea if you are not a 'standard' shape. Get one fitted by a qualified person anyway; it's surprising just how they are supposed to fit (if you see what I mean).

I have recently Invested in teh Rodney Powell, adn i find its really good its just what i wanted and fits to your shape. One think i would say is never put a price on youe safety. Its better to buy a safe secure protector, and have the money spent worthwhile, than risk your own safety. Thats my opinion, but good luck in finding your body protector |

I can only agree with beau, many people are injured as a result of a ill-fitting BP..you must get it fitted, as they may not "feel" right to you but they are all designed differently, and if you are ever involved with an insurance claim for Person Injury, if you have a reciept for the body protector WITH FITTING , you are deemed to have taken all reasonable precautions to ensure your own safety. Go to a good saddlers and try different ones on , as some are fine if you are tall/short/busty/broad, they do vary a lot, so if you are paying for a new one, get the right one for you and get it fitted. Good luck |

i have two and rodney powell, and a charles owen. both are very good and very comfortable.
but yes i agree DONT BUY OFF EBAY, go to a tack shop and have one fitted to you as different makes and styles are made for different shapes of bodys, espially between men and women as us women have these bouncing bubbley bits on our chests...

I would advise getting one properly fitted, they need to cover the collar bones and base of spine WITHOUT being pushed up at the back when in the saddle. I used to fit them when I had the saddlery and used to sit customers on a sturdy saddlehorse and deep seated saddle to check the fit at the back. Also bear in mind that a lot of body protectors feel very stiff when new, ut the soon soften up and 'mould' to your shape. |
