Pure or part-bred?
I am due to get my brood mare back at the end of this year and at some point in the future - not too distant, I would like to breed from her - I am thinking that this one might be her last foal but I can't decide if I should breed another part-bred (I have a part-bred gelding from her) or if I should try and breed a pure bred. I would want another good riding horse as I'm not interested in all the in-hand stuff, as much as I love the idea of a pure bred it worries me that if for any reason I couldn't keep the resulting foal I would have more chance selling a part-bred than a pure bred. Although she has great bloodlines they aren't fashionable ones. I see so many stallions that I like both pure and part bred - but the part-bred always seem more reasonably priced and have a ridden career to back up their performance.
I am really torn. Thinking from a one horse owner point of view - what would you do?
How do you make your breeding decisions? I know it may seem a long time off as I may not breed for another year at least - I want to be as informed as possible so I make the best decision for myself and for the resulting foal.
Thanks
Sorry to go on and on!

I'm also a one-horse owner who hopes to breed later this year. I think you have to do what you feel is best for you and not what is best for the market. I wouldn't breed with selling in mind as there are more than enough of them out there looking for homes. If the worst comes to the worst and you have to sell for any reason as long as the horse is a well-rounded individual I don't think that it matters whether it's PB or pure.

It depends on how much you love the pure-bred I guess. I haven't ever bred an Arab and I can see the dilemma entirely as in the open market you are likely to avoid the people who discount purebreds without ever having known or ridden one. It's a very personal decision and in your position, with only one mare, I reckon it's having the experience of breeding a foal that is the attraction. I think if I had a purebred mare, I would try to evaluate my own mare's bloodlines and conformation; try to work out if I wanted the foal for myself or to sell and decide on that basis. If you don't want to keep the foal but sell it, I might try to find a husband that would offer the best combination for a successful performance horse or pony that won't be 'wasted'. But if it were to keep the baby as my own riding horse, I'd probably go for a purebred. And in that case there are many others on this site who could advise which stallion would be the best husband for your mare. Egbert for example!!! (Tail Female Line thread..) |

This is a question I keep asking myself at the moment!! Choosing a stallion I mean. I'm toying (and only toying!) with breeding from my mare in the future. She's PBA (around 27%) so I'm always going to get a PBA foalie. But what stallion? Do I go for a pure-bred? Or maybe something else? Anglo perhaps? Or quarab? And if so, which one...? Foalie is going to be for me so I don't have to worry about selling on, but I'd be naive to think that I'd never have to sell, so I would need to bear this in mind.
If and when I go for it, I'm going to be looking for a proven performance stallion (endurance) who will improve on my mare's conformation. Decisions, decisions... but fun looking!!! |
