This weekend I started hacking my new boy on his own (we backed him around 12 weeks ago) after doing a couple of walks round the farm with my husband on foot and once with another horse for company, over this weekend he has got up to doing 3 laps, which takes about 40 minutes, others out on the farm trotted and cantered by and eric just kept going, he had a couple of little spooks on day one at birds flying out of the trees but by yesterday he was doing a whole lap of the farm in trot and then giving me a canter up our hill I remember taking this for granted after having Nut for 11 years but the fact eric has turned from a somewhat nervous to be sat on horse and indeed we parted company in week 1 of me backing him and i broke my elbow which put me out for 5 weeks to now when I've only been on him 6-7 weeks myself (had to get in help whilst out of action)taking me round the farm, going when I ask and stopping when i want, is just amazing. I nearly gave up on him when we parted company but am so thankful to everyone that told me to put it down to a bad day, not make the wrong decision too soon etc. When he went into canter for me and we made it up the hill, back to a nice steady trot and then walk I was thinking how far we'd come in the last few weeks and thought what a great easter weekend... Hope you've all had a good one too

Everyday I decide I want to do something else with him! Ultimately I love showing but I have an instructor from the senior riding staff at Royal Windsor Army Barracks who now trains their show jumpers and is trying to send me down that path (he's got me over a trotting pole so far!!!) but then having been on AL for sometime now, reading about endurance has got me interested in finding out more about that too...what I have learnt is that they should do a bit of everything and thats what we're planning to teach him |

Please keep us posted as I really need the encouragement of someone doing so well!
I have just started backing Tamba. I am at the leaning over stage and my husband led him round the school, walking a few steps and halting nicely.
We were doing so well that I tried to put my leg over and sit up but something startled him (I'm sure i didn't touch his quarters with my leg) and he spooked and had a bit of a freak. We went back a stage and finished well but I think I lost more confidence than he did!!
It was so much easier the first time round with Jameel - wonder if the fact it was 16 years ago has anything to do with it
I am so much looking forward to getting to the hacking out stage. |

Hi Bev, confidence is the key I have discovered. He takes his lead from me at every stage and in the early days if I wimped out so did he. Get help in if you need it was another thing I learnt early on too; at first I hated seeing someone else on him doing what I thought was my job, but now we have agreed he will do louis at home with me and be the first on early next year, so hopefully we'll miss out the breaking elbow next time around! Like you I did Nut myself but I was 18 then and at school so young and daft and i remember it being much easier but I think youth played a part in how brave I was!! Hope it goes well for you |

What ever you end up doing with your boy a combination of differant things will help.
More and more endurance riders are schooling their horses and taking them x country and SJ. Also it is good for show horses, Show Jumpers and eventers to do some endurance.
I took all my endurance horses showing so they could see the world in a differant light, they learn to travel,to be patient when they are in the Lorry/ trailer.

First of all, Well done Nut and Eric! It is those little things that we take for granted with an older horse that really are such a big deal with a youngster! Jack is 5 this year and I've backed him myself, but he is still very green, and like you, those lovely canters are just amazing! It sounds like you have a wonderful partnership too.
Hi Bev, it's been a long time since we spoke! I just wanted to give you another good news story, hope it helps! Jack is doing really well, though I know he's a year older than Tamba. He has just been so easy about 99% of things, and now happily hacks out alone or in company (when he is far better behaved but also easily wound up by the older horse!) Yesterday, we took a friends daughter on a little ride round the village, and he looked after her so well - even with scary things, he controlled himself. He did everything she asked (only in walk, obviously!), and she had steering and brakes and 'walk on'. From a tiny 9 year old with about 5 lessons, riding in a Dr Cook bitless bridle! I was so proud of him.
So, just to let you know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe Tamba was just having an off day. You ended on a good note, so focus on that, and have confidence in yourself, as Nut says. Tamba will take that from you, and as you see how good he can be, you will get even more confident and it is a good circle (as opposed to a vicious one!)
Another note on bitless bridles, I think you posted on another thread - most of the time I ride Jack in a natural hackamore, as the lady with Po does (sorry, forgotten your name ). Brakes are great and so is steering - would highly recommend. It's a shame you're not still up here, you could've borrowed both my bridles to try.
Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted.
ps, just a thought - has Tamba seen Uncle Jameel being ridden? It might reassure him that it is ok for someone to be up there! |

Thanks Nut & Kelly. I'm concentrating on being very positive so I'm sure it will pass to Tamba - fingers crossed. I am planning to take plenty time so he doesn't get upset at any stage. He is long lining beatifully, lovely halts and a very willing rein back.
I'm sure that ALL I've got to do is get on
Glad Jack is doing so well Kelly. I know you are very proud of him and rightly so. It has been a bit difficult for us as the horses moved ages ago and it has taken us so long to sell the house that I have been in two places most of the time. Although we are making new friends I have unfortunately lost all my old buddies who would have helped me with Tamba and I am a little bit on my own. Howard is coming down at the weekends to help so I am sure we will be fine. He really is a good boy and very well behaved when walking out in hand.
He has seen Uncle Jameel ridden and there is another lady at the yard who has ridden her mare out with us a couple of times too so that when he is ready to go out he will be happy to go with her. She's a dominant mare and also in the same field as Tamba so he is very respectful of Auntie Ebony
What's the main difference between a natural hackamore and the traditonal English hackamore. Mine has the leather strap behind - don't like the ones with the chain. |

Good plan Sally. I'm sure he'll be fine as he never stops telling me how I should be doing it...from his comfortable position on the ground |
