How awful is that - some people

Thoughts are with you

I had a feeling it was something to do with your posting Rosie, on how you lost your mare.
B******S.

It is something that concerns me too, as i always find people hunting in my fields.
The last guy i caught ran from me-i very nearly stole his dog, in order to speak to him, and explain the danger that he may cause.
One of the down side to thr 'right to roam', that what they argue back at me now, i'd like to have the right to roam in their gardens.
I hope you get them!

So sorry, do stay strong, and be brave. It's full of poo saying that a pheasant scared them, it wouldn't cause her to freak out like that, they'd be used to it.

How awful for you and your mare, I send my condolences.

Something must have gone on for your mare to run in blind panic.

Animals are inquisative creatures, and things that dont scare us can
scare the life out of them, if they dont understand what it is.

I truly hope you get to the bottom of this I really do.

Nikki, What is *This right to roam* malarky My horse is kept
in a very secluded place about 5 mins walk from the Local Hunt and
this Master of the Hunt excersies his hounds (which he has a right to do) along the bridlepaths and surrounding areas, but he has now
taken it that he can excercise these hounds in *Our* field He
did 2 weeks ago and the horses went beserk and ran through the electric fence, luckily its all post and rail so they didnt get out,
a senario that could have ended up like Rosie's.

People who dont understand horses you can kind of understand, but
Master of the Hunt I cant, he might think its bl*** hilarious but
we dont.

Just a thought.

Janet

ps his explantion was *He has a right to roam*

How terrible and very sad, it seems a feeble excuse a pheasant spooked them, we have pheasants grouse wild ducks etc in and out of our fields and the horses take no notice at all, it all sounds very suspecious. Thinking about you at this very sad time

Right to Roam, is just that! I know bloody unbelieveable!

It means that anyone, can go on your fields(walkers etc), from what i've been told anyway, there was a big doda with Madonna, as she didn't want walkers on her land, i think she managed to restrict it slightly.

What a dreadful story. This puts you in a very difficult position! But I'd be asking how did they know it was a pheasant that spooked the horse? Do they know about these things? Were they watching the horses instead of doing their work? What were they doing? YOu can't check underground pipes easily without either depth sounding equipment or digging! What insurance do they have for such jobs, since they should certainly have some kind of public liability if they're going onto others' land. I wonder if there is a 'watchdog' Internet site where you can try to get other people's experiences of this kind of thing.
I often wonder where liability would lie if, for example, a farmer comes careering along a road with a tractor and trailer (met five giant ones this morning on my hack!) and spooked the horse by their inconsiderate driving. Who stands where in the law? Roads were for horses before tractors; there should be obligations for drivers to know what they might meet on a public highway.
None of this helps you I know. It's just a reflection of the anger I and others feel about the dire consequences to you for other people's ignorant stupidity.
I really feel for you and hope you get something out of these people.

The people concerned will certainly have insurances to cover lilability, they are HUGE.
Thanks again all, my aim in posting this was to try and stop it happening again, but sympathy very much appreciated.

Hi Rosie

I was thinking were the jets up the day your mare died?

We have the electric board come onto our land they have to give notice before they go on the land and besides our gates are paddocked and they bring with them big vehicles onto the land and churn it up and last time they left their rubbish etc food wrappings from lunch, could your mare eaten anything of theirs?

Christine, no jets that day, the horses are used to them anyway, we're right on the flight path, no rubbish left either, we know for a fact that the mare died due to injury, when the AHT opened her up her chest and base of neck were full of blood from the internal bleeding, so as I think I said, a crashing fall and she must also have flipped over after hitting the ground.

I am so sorry for the appalling situation.

Defintiely get a solicitor - get the BHS and anyone else you can involved.

Suppose one of the horses had investigated the people and one of the contractors had been hurt - or killed? They would be quick enough to blame you!

Right to roam does not allow free access wherever you please anyway. But I think electrical etc people are allowed onto property without permission or warning - which makes sense cos if there was a leak or similiar it would be too dangerous to wait to get permission; and routine safety work could be badly compromised if say, one household in a road, decided not to allow it to happen.

As Roseanne says: how funny that they knew enough about horses to be able to say 'a pheasant scared them' and yet not think that what they were doing might be scary.

Best wishes and hugs

Years ago, at a farm where I kept Perissa, a hot air ballon landed in a field full of pregnant sheep and broodmares. The landlord was furious, because another 100 yards was an empty field. OK so a balloon doesn't have so much control but what happens next is ASTONISHING.

The supposrt team meet up with the balloon, farmer is annoyed but understands that once a balloon starts going down there isn't a whole lot that can be done BUT, they proceed to fire the balloon up again to sail it away. Have you heard the roar of a burner, let alone the MASSIVE balloon. All the animals (some 50 sheep and 6 mares) went ballistic. Farmer drove his tractor over the balloon to force them to pack it up and move it................ HE got prosecuted!!!!

It would appear that they have the right to land and takeoff anywhere. It made headline news at the time.

Similar thing happened to someone else, hot air balloon came down in her field, 9 pregnant mares went through the fencing, all aborted, she didn't get a penny from the balloonist - Richard Branson!

So sorry for you - what a terrible thing to happen

Couldn't help thinking two comments you made are connected

that they were "trailing a bit of thin wire"
and
that she "flipped over after hitting the ground"

sounds a bit like how they used to trip up the stunt horses in films

Hope you get them
lol

Hi Paula, I had thought of that too, but would have thought if it had been the wire, considering the speed whe would have been going there would be some sign, but the AHT could find nothing at all externally, I had plucked up enough courage to check her over before she was taken away and couldn't see a mark on her. Somehow, I will eventually get the truth if it's the last thing I do.

wire would not necessarily leave a mark....even at speed..I am an extra on films, TV etc, and have done a fair few films (Sharp's Waterloo being the biggest)and trust me..the wire does not leave any marks.

Many thanks for that info Madmare! I'll have a word with my vet in the morning and see what the AHT think.

I can't thank you ALL enough for your messages, they mean a lot.

What an awful thing to happen Rosi, your poor mare. I really hope you get somewhere with this. As for pheasants spooking your horses into such a frenzy that such horrific fatal injuries could be caused....B*****KS!!
