I agree with Libby. Bit like referring to a person as blue-blooded, infers that they are very highly bred (as it were!).

"Bred in the purple" means of very superior breeding, as Arachnid said. Years ago it referred to being of royal blood but is used more widely now. A very nice compliment to the horse (or to you)!!!!

Yes bred in the purple denotes breeding of superior blood, as is in royalty so to speak. As this little prince has not one but TWO grandsire's with three stars and a wealth of fabulous ancestors behind him I recon that qualifies him to have been bred in the purple, which is why I chose this cross

Bred in the purple is usually used by people who THINK they are superior bloodlines......this may not necesarily be the case, depends really on what bloodlines the individual considers to be the best.

I believe it goes back to Roman days, when the only purple dye available was extracted from shellfish and was very, very expensive, so only the Emperor and senators could afford it. As a result, if you said someone was 'bred in the purple' it was shorthand for being aristocratic.

It seems that the term "Bred in the purple" applies to those with superior breeding (certainly those whose parents, grandparents and so on who have proved themselves on passing on superior traits, be they confirmation, looks, disposition, height, stamina, superior ridden horses etc). As one person on this has quoted on this thread that some "people THINK" they have superior bloodlines, but may not necessarily be the case" is I believe a crass statement to make.

It is perhaps an old fashioned term, and if a horse is known to have "superior" bloodlines then the seller is perfectly entitled to use it. After all they would only show their complete ignorance if they had lied about its pedigree and were then rumbled by a potential purchaser.
I think people who know their Arab horse pedigrees would know straight away if a horse fitted the description "bred in the purple". By the way this term is also used in the Welsh Horse and Pony world.

Kerens statement makes perfect sense, afterall the ancient Emperors and Senators, Kings and Queens, would only buy and breed the best quality horses.

Well done Keren! A bit more about the colour purple on the link below. I guess that's why certain denominations etc use the colour (and maybe the Tsars did - I shall try to find out...)

Oh, I'm a mine of useless information, Roseanne - if only I knew people who were up on soaps/reality tv, modern pop music and sport, we could clean up in pub quizzes
