Purple dye was a colour that was very hard to make and so it was reserved for emperors etc (as in ancient Roman times). I thought born in the purple referred to being a child of the reigning monarch born while the monarch in question was actually on the throne (so Prince Charles was not born in the purple cos his mother was not Queen at the time).
Interesting!

yet in this country aren't the Royals referred to as "BLUE-blooded" not "purple"? |

Did you know.....( steady...one of my peices of useless info approaching) It took months and months of crushed , rotting shellfish to make the purple dye for things like royal cloaks. It was such a horrid smelly job that the people who did it had to live outside the village and were often shunned from things like weddings/gathering/celebrations cos they stank so bad. just thought you may be interested.......I,ll go now .......Polly |

>Yes bred in the purple denotes breeding of superior blood, as is in royalty so to speak. As this little prince has not one but TWO grandsire's with three stars <
What do the stars signify/ are they the same as CC with dogs? I wondered why some horses had stars after their names, didn't realise it might be some 'award' as it were!! ( i thought it might be a similar thing to how the warmblood people denote pure TB in their bloodlines with an X i think) |

Helen, these are stars awarded by ECAHO to signify that the horses with stars are top champions and producers of multi champion offspring, it is quiet an achievement to have one star, so three Stars is a mega Achievement(sp) ( there is only one 5* in the world!) can I also add with pride that WSA Charismma *** is the only 3* stallion in the UK to date ( unles there has been an update since I last looked |

"To Breed in the Purple."
What is meant by breeding a sow in the purple? I have seen this statement used many times by breeders who advertised "sows safe in pig bred in the purple."
To be "bred in the purple" means to be of royal or princely parentage. It originally was used in reference to the nobility of Europe, as purple was the insignia of royal blood, due to the fact that purple was the rarest and most costly color and only the rich and noble could buy it. When used in referring to live stock, it signifies that the animal in question has a long line of blooded ancestry. |
