We gave my step-father a digital camera for his 70 th birthday. At first he hated it. Now he cannot take enough photographs especially as he and my mum are always away on holiday. Nicky |

Unfortunately dad has no hobbies, just sits around all day watching the tv!what mother calls housewifes tv!he does share an interest in horses with me, and absolutely adores my Filly Pif, perhaps i can get a nice picture/or painting done for him, and myself for that matter.
Answered my own question.
Thanks everyone.

Paula, its a nightmare isnt it, your post made me laugh. A painting sounds a nice idea, perhaps i could suggest that for the 60th pressie - hmmm, digital camera is a good idea too, they dont have one of those....... |

Thats a nice idea Vera, i was thinking of arranging a surprise party for him, inviting his brov and sis and friends, perhaps i could arrange for the carriage to pick him up and take him there and still get the pic done as a pressie, camera is a nice idea but unfortunately his camera skills leave alot to be desired, he shakes alot whilst taking them(is this an age thing)? i dunno! Hi Louise, i think a camera is a nice idea for your pressie, unless your father has an affliction to cameras like mine.

My parents celebrated their Golden last year and I didnt know what to do to make it special!! They aren't party animals, tee total etc etc.. In the end we booked a meal in their favourite restaurant and I slid in and decorated it. Ordered them a lovely cake (and the restaurant provided a firework for the top)We booked a vintage car to take them there, took lots of pics, bought a glass picture frame engraved for the occasion and gave them a big bouquet of flowers. All their immediate family went and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves as the surprises kept coming. First the flowers when we arrived, then the car to take them. Table all decorated when they got their. Cake with firework after desert and then the children gave them the frame whilst we were there. That was 6 months ago and they are still talking about it. The flowers kept the memories fresh until the pics were printed and now they regularly change them in the frame(which is their keepsake). My brother paid for the meal and our contribution came to less than £100 but you would think we spent £1,000's. Dont know if there are any ideas there!!!

As old fossils! mum and dad dont eat much, but they certainly do enjoy themselves , they drink, smoke(which im not to keen on)but at that age im not going to tell them off!
So meals and cakes poss not a good idea, but im glad that your prents enjoyed it,Sandie, perhaps its an idea for louise.

Sounds lovely Sandie, i have booked a table for Sunday lunch for the family in a really nice pub we go to, that will be on his birthday, so perhaps we could get a cake down there and make it a bit more special. |

Hope it all goes well louisejo. Certainly the thought that goes into it seems to be more important to that generation than the money spent. If only everyone could be like that!! |

If he likes watching TV all day how about a nice new comfy chair? A footrest? DVDs of his favourite programmes?
My late father was easy-peasy to buy for: he loved anything about Roman Britain and over the years he had books, videos, coins, models... the year he died we had hoped to get him a small genuine antique to go with his genuine coins...

He already has a very comfy tv chair, its so difficult, when your younger you dont really worry that much about what you buy, you know they will love it because it comes from you, but i think as we get older things get more complicated. |

Posh leather (non slip sole) slippers then? Super cosy cardie? Several bottles of very good whisky/sherry/whatever he likes and a really nice glass?
At the risk of stating the blooming obvious: have you asked him if there's anything special he'd like? Even something un-present-like such as having the bathroom done perhaps? A new mattress? A really nice goose down duvet and pillows? A bedside lamp? A trip to the theatre? A personalised mug/sweatshirt? (hint hint: I can do these...)
Doing my best to help here!

Glossy, try www.paramountzone.com all sorts of things for all ages on there, depends on your sense of humour but if it is as bad as mine you will find something! I bought a life size radio control rat on there a few years ago and used to "shoot" it out from under the table to frighten my lady friends, worked a treat until my lurcher thought it was real and chewed it up! Good luck in your search Oz :) |

OOw ! just thought as you are in the same part of the country to me, you can book the old train that goes over the quantocks to Minehead. they seat you in the dining carriage, all leather and waiters, serve sunday lunch, and then you get a couple of hours in Minehead, then they serve High Tea on the way back.! My friend found all the Land Army Girls her Nan worked with and got some of them on the train for Nans 80th Birthday, then as the waiter started serving he said " Madam there are a few ladies without seats , may they join you ?" and into her car walked all her friends from the War !! thankfully Nan did not have a dicky heart ! Just an idea . Polly |
