Got into work yesterday morning to find 2 of our beloved goldfish looking rather worse for wear. One floating upside down and the other on his side I took them out and isolated them, but one looked really poorly as it just couldn't right itself, and was gasping for air. After a few hours it seemed wrong to let it suffer so our head of biology put it out of its misery But little fishy number 2 didn't look quite so bad, so got a reprieve. After trawling the net I found some info that recommended epsom salts...apparently he could be constipated! So 2 1/2 hour sessions in his salt pool and lots of tlc, overnight he looks like he's back from the brink! We're going to call him either Jesus (for obvious reasons) or Wotsit cos he's small and orange Who would have thought you could get so attached to a goldfish!

Goldfish are much better pets than people give them credit for. We had three for many years: Maggie, Neil and Ken (named for the major politicians of the day). Ken was killed by the other two (oddly enough, round about the time Ken Livingstone was ousted from the GLC); Neil committed suicide (again, round about the time Neil Kinnock lost the leadership of the Labour Party) and Maggie went on to much loved by us for nearly 20 years, when she was pts due to a cancer growth.

They were great fun, great personalities, and I still miss them.

Glad your little orange chap fought through!

Fingers crossed he makes it through another night! All the teachers have been popping in for an update on his progress and usually left giggling as I guided him around his salt bath with my finger, talking to him soothingly! We're not having a good run lately as one of teh kids overfed and killed one, we just lost poor 'Precious' and now lil 'Wotsit' is in Intensive Care! Am watching the other 4 like a hawk now
