I've been having a little look on rightmove, you can't get a property with land for less than 300k ! No mushy peas and chips in gravy for me!

Michelle, you will have to do the lotto....and pray! We nearly moved to Wales 15 years ago, but somehow, we drove West and found a place where no others lived, peace, tranquility, a stream running by the back door, birds a tweeting, lush green grass,........no other Arab studs.......... Then half of Sussex moved next door..I reckon we have most of the judges living around here, and most of the big studs So if anyone wants a day out seeing Arabians, look no further than Devon. We could arrange guided tours! Now that's a good idea?
We are very discreet and polite in Devon, if we wanted to bring the big guns out at our South West C Show.........no one else would attend!! so we lay low...and wait for the really big shows!
Devon has Clotted cream, rain, cider and Devon dumplings on offer, the Exmoor and Dartmoor pony, rain, and as a county, we have the most roads, shame they are a bit wiggly rain, now, done my tourest guide bit Oh, we also have a big cat running around, the Beast of Exmoor.
There is not much demand for liveries in the South West, I think due to most having a bit of land. You can get DIY for £10 a week, and I believe full livery for £55.

Sue, does it rain a lot in Devon? You see, being a bit of a daddy's girl I always speak to him when I have one of my mad ideas about moving away (but now I am 25 with my own place and getting married next year, I don't see why my ideas are so mad anymore, they are actually do-able?!?) and he always turns his noise up and pulls a face at whatever I say eg: 'I'm looking at a house in Yorkshire' 'Yorkshire! You don't want to go there it's freezing', 'I'm looking at a house in Bedford' 'Bedford! Horrible place, they grow cabbages in Bedford' 'I'm looking at a place in Devon' 'Devon! You don't want to go there it rains all the time in Devon and it's miles from anywhere'. You see? My parents are non horsey, afternoon tea munching Londoners, as I have said before on this forum. My dad is also very well travelled so it's difficult to argue with him! ha ha But James's sister moved to Okehampton (spelling?) last year and has set up a nice little company with her partner, something to do with dog sitters, they love it!

Devon is the second wettest county in England, the first being Cumbria......One item you must have when moving here is a sand school! preferably one indoors. Second item you must have is Wellies.
There you are then, move to Devon and do house sitting? There is a demand for horsey house sitters I know.

Michelle,
You will no doubt be pleased to know that there are investment banks up north......however Edinburgh may be just a tad further than you had planned on!!
By the way Aberdeenshire is I believe the driest county in the UK

Is it really Mike? I never knew that. I once had a romance when I was about 18 with an older man from Dundee (don't ask!) and it was always windy there! There is a property for sale with land quite near to me (about 1.25 hours) which I am hopefully going to see on Sunday with 5.5 acres for 350k, only about 70k over my price limit.... i can always get a dodgy mortgage broker I guess.

Now, why not come really up North. Come live in Geordie land or glorious Northumberland.
10yr old Bungalow, 6 stables, new Equi-sand school, 10 acres of well fenced paddocks. £264,000. Just been sold!!!! The views were worth that ammount.
Ta rah fa noo. Ha way the Lads.
Shirley I'd live in Wales. I love it. Hope to take a couple of horses this year and ride, ride, ride.

A bit behind as usual but how much does it cost to get a horsebox over the bridge into Wales?? and a car for that matter.....
Everyone has forgotten CORNWALL I can't believe it!!!!
More beaches than you can shake a stick at down here!!
On another note friends of ours have land, american barn, other stables and a sand school just outside Sheffield near Dore it is very nice and they no longer have any horses but are retaining the place with the hope of building on it one day. They might consider renting it?? not sure really but they would probably know of other places around sheffield if they didn't want to rent their place. |

There are great properties with land on the "Rural Scene" web site and "Guy Sherratt" web site. When I'm at work (and not working) I am usually on the arabian lines site or looking at dreamy properties with lots more land than I've got. For good value I have to say West Wales is the best but my husband says we cant go because the welsh hate us and would burn our house down "come the revolution" I disagree and we are sort of displaced Irish anyway. Im sure the welsh don't really hate us but you can understand a slight irritation on their behalf if the English are invading. However England does have a great quantity of Jones, Evans, and Williams and no one minds about that, or do they?? Having said all that I think Devon would be safer. Heather. PS I've already got ferrets and Jack Russells so perhaps North it should be. Black pudding looks particularly revolting though!! |

Ok - I vote for DEVON despite the rain!
The variety in riding is just great - it's hilly, wooded, sandy beached, with moor, common land and loads of country lanes.
Admittedly if you want all the facilities you have to pay, but it is definately not the most expensive county to live in.

A small two bed mid terrace property further up the street from me sold 6 months ago for £86,000 at the back was nine stables, tack room, muck heap over the valley to the rear (god send, NO REMOVAL FEES ALL GOES ORGANIC BACK TO THE EARTH), RUNNING WATER, ELECTRICITY and a concrete yard with parking for box.
No land, 2 minutes from entrance to country park and over 20 miles of off road riding odd road to cross, 5 minutes from town centre and five minutes to motorway entrance, although on the map it looks very built up, we are pretty semi rural being in a green belt and park area.
Not bad for £86,000 eehhh, wonder whats mine's worth, oh we are in Kearsley nr Bolton and 8 miles from Manchester

Hey dee, I saw that advertised! The guy used too train racehorses from there( so he was telling me)! When I asked about turnout he said, oh the football pitch at the back is alright, nobody ever says anything!! Nearly weed. The farmers guardian newpaper tends to have lots of properties for sale/ to let in the north west.
